Free Online Typing Speed Test — Measure Your WPM and Accuracy Instantly, No Login

How fast do you actually type? Find out in 60 seconds.

The Typing Speed Test at Ultimate Tools measures your words per minute and accuracy on a passage of real words — built in React, no download, no account.

How It Works

  1. The test shows a passage of common English words
  2. Start typing — the timer begins on your first keystroke
  3. Correct letters turn green, incorrect letters turn red
  4. When the passage is complete (or the timer runs out), your WPM and accuracy are shown

Metrics shown at the end:

Metric What it means
WPM Words per minute — standard 5 characters = 1 word
Accuracy Percentage of keystrokes that were correct
Correct words Words typed without any errors
Time Duration of the test

Test Modes

Mode Duration
30 seconds Quick check
60 seconds Standard test
120 seconds Endurance measure

The 60-second test is the standard used by most typing speed references.

Average Typing Speeds

Knowing where you stand:

Level WPM range
Beginner 20–40 WPM
Average adult 40–60 WPM
Proficient typist 60–80 WPM
Fast typist 80–100 WPM
Professional / competition 100+ WPM

Average office workers type around 40 WPM. Developers tend to be higher (60–80 WPM). Top competitive typists exceed 150 WPM.

Tips for Improving Your WPM

Accuracy before speed. A 95% accurate typist at 60 WPM produces more usable output than an 80% accurate typist at 80 WPM — errors require correction. Train accuracy first; speed follows.

Don't look at the keyboard. Touch typing — knowing key positions by feel — is the single biggest unlock for sustained speed. Every glance at the keyboard breaks your rhythm.

Use all fingers. The home row position (fingers resting on A-S-D-F and J-K-L-;) exists because each finger has an assigned zone. Typing with two index fingers caps your ceiling.

Practice common words. A huge portion of typed text is made up of the 200–300 most common English words. Getting those automatic means only new/rare words require conscious attention.

Slow down to go faster. Counter-intuitive: deliberately typing slightly slower with zero errors trains cleaner muscle memory than thrashing at maximum speed with constant mistakes.

No Download, No Account

The test runs in your browser. Built in React. No data is sent anywhere — your WPM score is shown locally.
