How to Play

Press an arrow key (or swipe on mobile) to slide all tiles in that direction. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one with their combined value. A new tile (2 or 4) appears after every move.

How Scoring Works

Every merge adds the resulting tile's value to your score. Merging two 64s adds 128. Merging two 512s adds 1024. Score accumulates throughout the game — your best score is saved in your browser and shown above the grid every session.

What Happens When the Board Fills Up

If no empty cells remain and no two adjacent tiles share the same value — no moves are possible and the game ends. This is the loss condition. A new game resets the board but your best score stays.

Can I Keep Playing After Reaching 2048?

Yes. When you create the 2048 tile, you can choose to keep playing and aim for 4096, 8192, or beyond. The theoretical maximum tile is 131072 (2^17), though most players encounter 4096–8192 in extended play.

Strategy Tips

Keep your highest tile in one corner. Pick a corner — top-left works well — and never swipe in the direction that moves it out. This one rule separates casual play from consistent high scores.

Build a descending snake chain. From your corner tile, arrange tiles in descending order outward: 1024 → 512 → 256 → 128 → 64. Merges cascade along the chain without displacing your anchor tile.

Prioritize two directions. If your highest tile is top-left, use left and up almost exclusively. Only swipe right or down when forced — and recover immediately.

Don't chase new tiles. The random new tile spawns in an empty cell. Don't rearrange your whole board chasing a 4 when you could have kept building your chain.
