The classic logic puzzle. Numbered clues, hidden mines, and one wrong click ends it all.
The Minesweeper game at Ultimate Tools runs in your browser — built in React, three difficulty levels, no download, no login.
How to Play Minesweeper
Goal: Reveal every safe cell on the grid without clicking a mine.
The numbers tell you everything. When you reveal a cell, it shows a number — that number is the count of mines in the 8 surrounding cells. Use those numbers to deduce which neighboring cells are safe and which are mines.
Controls:
| Action | How |
|---|---|
| Reveal a cell | Left-click |
| Flag a suspected mine | Right-click |
| Unflag a cell | Right-click again |
| Chord (reveal neighbors) | Click a numbered cell when all mines are flagged |
| New game | Click the New Game button |
First click is always safe. The mines are placed after your first click, so you'll never hit one immediately.
Difficulty Levels
| Level | Grid size | Mines |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 9×9 | 10 |
| Intermediate | 16×16 | 40 |
| Expert | 30×16 | 99 |
Start on Beginner if you're new. Expert is genuinely brutal.
How to Read the Numbers
A 1 next to your flagged mine: that 1's mine is accounted for — look elsewhere.
A 3 with only 2 revealed neighbors: 3 mines somewhere in the remaining covered neighbors — don't click any of them.
A 0: the cell has no adjacent mines. The game auto-reveals all neighbors when a 0 is uncovered — this is how large safe areas cascade open.
Strategy
Start with corners and edges. They have fewer neighbors, making the math simpler — a corner cell has only 3 neighbors instead of 8.
Use the 1-2-1 pattern. If you see 1-2-1 in a row along an edge, the mines are in specific positions relative to the sequence. This is one of the most useful patterns to recognize.
Flag conservatively. Flags are just reminders, not actions. It's fine to hold off flagging until you're certain — premature flags can mislead you later.
When you're stuck, guess smart. On Expert, some endgame positions require a guess. Pick cells at the edge of revealed areas where the probability of a mine is lowest, not isolated cells surrounded by unknowns.
