Question: How to make a personal blog that looks good?

I just started using Jekyll and GitHub pages to host my website. While I'm mainly interested in writing posts about math and documenting any interesting programming projects I do, I want to make my website look appealing and interesting. Right now it's a little bit bland.

If anyone more experienced in this area can help, that would be awesome.
