What is Azure Data Factory?
Azure Data Factory (ADF) is a cloud-based data integration service provided by Microsoft Azure. It is designed to enable organizations to create, schedule, and manage data pipelines that can move data from various source systems to destination systems, transforming and processing it along the way.
What is Integration Runtime in Azure?
Integration Runtime (IR) is the backbone of Azure Data Factory, providing the essential computational resources needed for data transfer operations and efficiently executing data-related tasks. In Azure Data Factory, a pipeline is constructed from a series of activities, each representing a specific action to be carried out. These actions can encompass tasks like data transfers or dispatching other actions within the pipeline. There are three types of integration runtime:
➔ Azure IR
➔ Self-hosted
➔ Azure-SSIS
Integration Runtime in Azure Active Directory
Azure Data Factory (ADF) Integration Runtime is a critical component of Microsoft Azure Data Factory, which is responsible for executing and managing data integration and transformation tasks. It provides the infrastructure and resources necessary to move, transform, and process data within ADF pipelines. Integration Runtime serves as the bridge between data sources and destinations, ensuring seamless data movement across various systems, whether they are on-premises, in the cloud, or in hybrid environments.
➔ Facilitates Data Movement: It enables data to flow between diverse data stores, such as databases, cloud storage, and files, supporting tasks like data migration, replication, and extraction.
➔ Empowers Data Transformation: Integration Runtime allows for data transformations, including cleaning, aggregating, and structuring data to meet specific business requirements.
➔ Manages Orchestration: It schedules and orchestrates the execution of activities within ADF pipelines, ensuring that data processing occurs in the desired order and timeframe.
➔ Ensures Hybrid Compatibility: ADF Integration Runtime is versatile and capable of handling data integration between on-premises and cloud-based systems, making it suitable for hybrid data architectures.
➔ Integrates with Azure Services: It seamlessly integrates with other Azure services, enhancing its capabilities and supporting a wide range of data integration scenarios.
➔ Monitors and Secures Data Movement: Integration Runtime provides monitoring and security features to track and safeguard data during its transfer and transformation.
