Short answer: Yes, an old Android phone can run as a camera 24 hours a day — but heat, not the camera, is what kills it. The single biggest heat source on most phones is the screen. If you have turned an old phone into a camera, you already know the first week is easy. You prop it on a shelf, plug it in, and it works.
The question nobody answers is what happens in month three. The back of the phone is warm all the time. The case does not sit flat any more. Someone in your house asks if it is safe to leave a phone plugged in like that.
This guide is about that part — running a phone as a camera for months, not for an afternoon. It is written for the phones people actually have spare: a five- or six-year-old budget Android, in a room that is not air conditioned, on a charger that came with something else.
Can you leave an old Android phone recording 24 hours a day?
Yes. A phone is a small computer with a camera, and it is designed to run continuously — that is what a phone does. The limits are not the camera sensor or the processor. They are heat and the battery, and both are manageable.
The practical rule is this: keep the phone cool and keep the charging slow, and an old handset will run as a camera for a very long time. Let it cook — screen on, in a case, lying on a bed, fast-charging in a hot room — and the battery will swell within months. Heat is the limit, not the camera
Three things warm up a phone that is working as a camera.
The display. On most phones, the screen is one of the largest single consumers of power in the device — often the largest. A camera app that keeps a live preview on the screen is paying that cost every second of every day, and every watt of it comes back out as heat.
Charging. Pushing current into a battery makes heat. Fast charging makes more of it. A phone that is plugged in permanently is being warmed from the inside by the charging circuit as well as by the work it is doing.
Encoding and radio. Compressing video and sending it over Wi-Fi both cost energy. This part is real but it is the smallest of the three on most setups.
Add them up and you see the shape of the problem. If you leave the screen on, you have roughly doubled the heat for no benefit at all — nobody is standing in front of the phone watching the preview. You are watching from another device.

What battery swelling actually looks like
Lithium batteries age faster when they are hot and when they are held at a full charge. A phone permanently on a charger in a warm room is both of those conditions at once. Over months, the cell can start to produce gas and expand. This is normal battery chemistry going wrong slowly, not a defect in your phone.
Look for these signs, roughly once a month:
- The back cover or the screen starts to lift at one corner.
- The phone rocks or spins when you put it face-up on a flat table. It used to sit flat.
- There is a visible gap along the seam between the screen and the frame.
- The screen has a raised patch, or the touch response goes strange in one area.
If you see any of those, stop. Unplug the phone, take it out of service, and do not try to press the back down, puncture the battery, or keep using it "just for a while". A swollen cell is a fire risk. Take it to a repair shop — on most older budget phones a replacement battery costs a small fraction of the phone, and a phone with a fresh battery goes straight back into camera duty.
There is no shame in a battery reaching the end of its life. A five-year-old phone has usually done thousands of charge cycles already. The goal is to make the next few years slow and boring, not to squeeze the last drop out of a cell that is already tired.
The setup that keeps an old phone alive
None of this needs money. It is all placement and settings.
1. Take the case off. A silicone or leather case is a blanket. The metal or glass back of the phone is its heatsink — let it touch the air. This is the single easiest change and often the most effective one.
2. Stand it up, do not lay it down. A phone lying flat on a bed, a cushion, a cloth, or a stack of papers has nowhere to send its heat. Standing upright in a cheap stand, or clipped to a shelf edge, it can shed heat off both faces. If you are propping it with something, prop it with something hard.
3. Keep it out of the sun and off other hot things. Direct sunlight through a window will heat a phone far past anything the phone itself is doing. So will sitting on top of a Wi-Fi router or a set-top box. Both are common camera positions because they are near a window or near power — pick a spot a few inches away instead.
4. Charge slowly. If you have a choice of chargers, use the small old 5W one, not the fast charger. Slow charging generates noticeably less heat, and a phone that is only maintaining its charge does not need speed. If your phone has a charging limit or "battery protection" setting in Settings → Battery, turn it on.
5. Turn the screen off — and keep it off. This is the part most guides get wrong, because most phone-camera apps need the display awake. 6. Drop the resolution if the phone is old. A phone from 2019 encoding at maximum resolution all day is working much harder than the same phone at a moderate setting. For watching a doorway, a shop counter, or a sleeping baby, you do not need the highest setting. Lower resolution also means smaller files, which matters if you are recording to a 32GB phone.
7. Airplane mode plus Wi-Fi, if the phone has no SIM. A phone with no SIM card in it will keep hunting for a mobile network and warm itself doing so. Airplane mode on, then Wi-Fi back on, gives you the network you need and stops the search.
8. Check it monthly. Put a hand on the back. Warm is fine. Uncomfortably hot is a signal. Look at the seams. That is the whole inspection.
Why local recording matters for the heat problem too
There is a second reason a phone in a hot room does better with a local-only camera app, and it is not obvious.
A cloud camera app has to upload video continuously. That means the radio is transmitting all day, and on a weak or intermittent connection it transmits harder and retries more. It also means your video is leaving the building, and your monthly data allowance is paying for it.

When a phone is the wrong tool
Being honest about this is more useful than pretending otherwise.
- Outdoors, unprotected. Rain and dust will end a phone quickly. Behind glass, inside a covered porch, or inside a proper enclosure — fine. Bolted to an outside wall — no.
- Very hot enclosed spaces. A closed car in the sun, a metal cabinet, a sealed box. The phone will thermally throttle and then shut itself down, and the battery will age fast even if it survives.
- A phone with an already-swollen battery. Retire it or replace the cell. Do not run it.
- Maximum resolution, 24 hours a day, on a very old phone. It will work, it will just run hot and fill storage. Turn it down.

The short version
Heat is what ends a phone-as-camera project, and the screen is the biggest controllable source of it. Take the case off, stand the phone up, keep it out of the sun, charge it slowly, and run an app that does its job with the display off. Do that and a phone you were going to throw away becomes a camera that runs for years, costs nothing per month, and keeps its footage in your house.
