A failed payment on Stripe is a documented event with a code, a webhook, and a paper trail. The same failure inside a subscription platform's own billing layer arrives wearing that platform's vocabulary, timing, and opinions about retries. Treating them as one problem with one playbook is how recovery tools end up double-charging customers or politely waiting out a native schedule that was never going to save anyone.
The differences are mechanical, not cosmetic. Who owns the attempt — you, the platform, or the processor underneath? What does the platform's own retry logic do if nobody intervenes, and does it announce itself or run silent? Where does the customer's card actually live, and whose page updates it? A conductor earns the title by answering those questions per platform, in production, and conducting each one in its own grammar.
That is the work described in our platform guides — the Recharge dunning guide reads nothing like the Stripe one, because Recharge's third-party mode is a genuinely different machine from Stripe Billing's weave. Swipe Again would rather publish nine honest platform stories than one blended claim. Merchants can tell the difference, and so, eventually, can their recovery rates.
