Swipe Again for Swipe Again

The Expiry Horizon

Every card on file is a countdown running in silence. Expiry dates are printed months in advance, known to the issuer, known to the network — and routinely discovered by subscription businesses only when the charge fails. That is the strangest part of the expiry problem: it is the one failure that announces itself years early and still arrives as a surprise.

Working ahead of the horizon changes the conversation completely. A renewal reminder sent while the card still works is a courtesy — your card ending in 04 expires next month; here is a thirty-second update. The same message sent after a failed charge is an emergency repair conducted while the subscription bleeds. Same ask, same link, entirely different temperature — and entirely different completion rates, because people fix calm problems at leisure and abandon urgent ones under stress.

Swipe Again reads the expiry horizon as part of the schedule: the recovery flow watches dates the way it watches declines, and asks early, while asking is easy. The best recovery is the one that never becomes a recovery at all — just a quiet update, completed weeks before it mattered.
