Australia is being called upon to embed artificial intelligence (AI) education across all school subjects to keep pace with global advancements. Jon Shen, Suncorp's AI executive, in his report "Building Tomorrow: Preparing Australia for the Age of AI," emphasizes the need for immediate action to incorporate AI into curricula from mathematics to English, to equip students with essential future skills like critical thinking and problem-solving.
Shen highlights that while students often carry AI-enabled devices, there's a significant gap in AI understanding within businesses with 97% struggling to demonstrate AI's value and 48% of workers hesitant to disclose AI use to management. He warns that without structured AI policy unregulated use could pose data privacy and security risks.
The report also points to substantial investments in AI infrastructure by countries like the US, France, and China, underscoring the urgency for Australia to act to safeguard data sovereignty and remain competitive in the AI-driven global landscape.
