1. Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF)

OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect (OIDC) form the backbone of modern federated identity and API authorization across single-page applications (SPAs), mobile apps, and cloud microservices. However, implementation oversights—such as loose redirect_uri regex validation, optional Proof Key for Code Exchange (PKCE) enforcement, unvalidated HTTP Host headers during callback construction, and missing state parameter validation—lead directly to full account takeover (ATO) and token exfiltration.

Vulnerability Vector Root Cause Impact RFC 9700 / BCP Mitigation
Loose redirect_uri Matching Prefix matching, regex wildcards, or ignoring query/fragment params. Critical (CVSS 9.8) — Authorization code theft via open redirect chains or subdomains. Strict exact-string matching. Reject wildcards & path traversals.
PKCE Downgrade Attack Server fails to require code_challenge on /authorize or accepts exchange without code_verifier. High (CVSS 7.5-8.5) — Intercepted auth codes exchangeable by malicious third-party apps. Require code_challenge_method=S256 for all public clients and reject non-PKCE exchanges.
Host Header Code Injection Server uses untrusted Host header to dynamically construct callback URLs (e.g., CVE-2026-34083). Critical (CVSS 9.6) — Complete redirection of authorization codes to attacker infrastructure. Validate Host header against server-side configuration; never generate URI from raw HTTP headers.
State Fixation / Login CSRF Missing, predictable, or unvalidated state token bound to victim session. High (CVSS 8.0) — Cross-user account linking; victim session bound to attacker identity. Mandate cryptographically random, session-bound state parameter verified at token endpoint.

Key Vulnerability Deep-Dives

1. Loose redirect_uri Matching & Open Redirect Escalation

Many OAuth implementations validate redirect_uri using partial string matches or regex rules like https://*.example.com/*. Attackers exploit path traversal (/oauth/callback/../../attacker), parameter pollution, or subdomain takeover on dev.example.com to capture authorization codes in HTTP Referer headers or via location redirects.

2. PKCE Downgrade Attacks

Even when PKCE (code_challenge / code_verifier) is supported, server-side implementations often make it optional for legacy compatibility. An attacker intercepting an authorization request strips code_challenge before forwarding it to the authorization server. If the server permits non-PKCE token exchange, the authorization code can be exchanged freely.

3. Host Header Authorization Code Injection (CVE-2026-34083 Class)

When applications dynamically synthesize OAuth redirect URIs using incoming HTTP request headers (such as Host or X-Forwarded-Host), an attacker sending:

GET /oauth/authorize?response_type=code&client_id=app1 HTTP/1.1
Host: evil-attacker.com
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

causes the authorization server to emit the callback code straight to https://evil-attacker.com/callback?code=AUTH_CODE_SECRET.

Production Remediation Checklist

  1. Exact-Match redirect_uri Validation: Maintain strict string equality lists for every client ID; disallow wildcards, regex matches, and path segments.
  2. Mandatory S256 PKCE Enforcement: Enforce SHA-256 PKCE for ALL client types (public and confidential) and fail hard if code_verifier is omitted or mismatched.
  3. Session-Bound State Tokens: Generate 256-bit cryptographically secure random state tokens tied directly to the client's HTTP-only session cookie.
  4. Hardened Callback Construction: Disable dynamic URL synthesis from HTTP Host or proxy headers; bind canonical domains strictly in environment configurations.
