For the Ghost in the Machine theme, I focused on honoring the past and preserving family legacies through an offline oral history transcription framework. Using local open-weight AI architectures—combining Whisper frameworks for edge-based voice processing and Gemma models for automated narrative synthesis—we can record, transcribe, and index ancestral stories before they are lost to time.
Why Open Innovation Matters:
When handling sensitive personal histories, private family memories, and multi-generational audio data, closed-source models introduce critical security vulnerabilities and corporate data-logging risks. By running inference entirely locally on a laptop without an active internet connection, this open-weight approach guarantees complete data privacy. Furthermore, building on open frameworks prevents vendor lock-in, ensures zero per-token runtime costs, and ensures that the codebase remains fully functional long after third-party proprietary APIs change their structures or disappear entirely. Open AI ensures that history stays in the hands of the families who lived it.
