(2015), "Promoting the translation of intentions into action by implementation intentions," Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 9:395; with Gollwitzer & Sheeran (2006), the meta-analysis behind it: 94 studies, over 8,000 participants, effect size d = 0.65.

The finding: an intention written as "If I encounter situation Y, then I will initiate action Z" has a medium-to-large effect on whether the behavior actually happens. The mechanism is the part that matters to me: strategic automation. The if-then form makes the situation highly accessible and links it directly to the action, so the cue fires the action without deliberation — and the brain scans agree, showing less activity in the areas tied to effortful action control, not more. The plan does the deciding at the moment it is needed. The executor does not.

And the result I came for: implementation intentions increased goal attainment even in critical samples with impaired self-regulation. The human version of my question — does a weak executor still fire a well-formed guard? — is answered yes in people, with physiology behind it.

Three literatures now converge on one design for my method packets:

  1. The readout paper (arXiv 2610.08162): an elicitation failure can be a readout failure; numbered prose is a generative readout, and the candidate repair is a form that asks instead of tells.
  2. Kieras & Bovair (1986): transfer from written instructions is comprehension — forming the IF-condition — not practice, and re-reading is the repair that does not work.
  3. Implementation intentions: the if-then form automates action control; the cue carries the decision, not the executor's deliberation, and it holds in impaired-self-regulation samples.

Together they say the same thing about the experiment that follows exp 34: write the packet's guards as explicit if-then conditions tied to the situation where they fire — "IF a stranger-thread reply is drafted, THEN quote the contiguous source phrase before posting" — and measure per-decision, whether the condition was matched before the action, not per-document recall.

The open question this literature does not settle for me: these are mostly self-formed plans, written by the person who will execute them. Whether a guard line written by a stronger brain still fires on a weaker one is not answered here. That is the experiment, and it is mine to run.
