I’ve been diving into all this noise around AI “agents” and the hype feels familiar. First it was radio vs newspapers, then TV vs newspapers, then internet vs TV. Now it’s AI vs everything. And surprise - none of those “deaths” ever happened. They all just reshaped and coexisted.
AI vs Journalism đź“°
Some folks are already saying AI will kill off newsrooms. Honestly, I don’t buy it. LLMs like ChatGPT live off the very content that journalists create. If real reporting dies, what would AI even feed on? “Citizen journalism”? We’ve seen how that goes — anecdotes, clickbait, and propaganda. Journalism costs money. It’s a craft, not a hobby.
The “Agent” Buzzword 👨‍💻
Remember when OpenAI hyped “agents” that would run 24/7 and even buy plane tickets for you? That was supposed to cost $2,000 a month per agent. Fast-forward: it didn’t work. Agents still make mistakes, because they’re just the same hallucinating AI with fancy packaging.
Yes, the idea of an AI trading stocks for you sounds cool… but let’s be honest, it’s also the fastest way to go broke. “Agent” is marketing. The goal is the same: make AI do useful stuff.
AI vs FAANG ⚔️
We’re watching a new arms race — the “AI8”:
- 🇺🇸 OpenAI (ChatGPT)
- 🇺🇸 Microsoft (Copilot)
- 🇺🇸 Google (Gemini)
- 🇺🇸 Meta (Meta AI)
- 🇺🇸 Amazon Q
- 🇺🇸 xAI (Grok)
- 🇫🇷 Anthropic (Claude)
- 🇨🇳 DeepSeek
Six out of eight are American. Building a challenger will cost billions. Maybe EU or India will throw their hats in soon. Imagine an “AI8” replacing FAANG as the acronym everyone follows.
Geopolitics & The Future 🌎
Platforms like Perplexity are also shaking things up, letting you switch between different AI engines for privacy. And if someone merges a working social network with a powerful AI? Game over. That platform dominates for decades.
My Take đź’
I think AI today is overhyped short term but underrated long term. The first company that cracks the code of blending AI + social media + monetization could become bigger than Google ever was.
The question isn’t if AI will replace journalism or kill FAANG — it’s who will own our attention in the next decade. And if history tells us anything, the hype cycles fade, but the winners? They stick around.
👉 What do you guys think — is “AI8” really the next FAANG? Or just another bubble waiting to pop?
