NordPass vs 1Password vs Bitwarden: Best Password Manager in 2026

I tested the three most popular password managers for a month each. Here is which one I actually kept using.

Quick Comparison

Feature NordPass 1Password Bitwarden
Price $1.49/mo $2.99/mo Free/$10/yr
Devices Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
Autofill ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐
UI/UX ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐
Security XChaCha20 AES-256 AES-256
Passkeys Yes Yes Yes
Data Breach Scanner Yes Yes (Watchtower) No (free)

NordPass

NordPass surprised me. From the team behind NordVPN, it uses XChaCha20 encryption (faster than AES-256) and has the smoothest autofill experience of the three.

Pros:

  • Fastest autofill I have tested
  • Clean, intuitive interface
  • Data breach scanner included
  • Passkey support
  • Most affordable premium option

Cons:

  • Fewer advanced features than 1Password
  • Sharing is limited on the free plan

1Password

1Password is the gold standard for features. Watchtower security alerts, travel mode, and family sharing are excellent. But it is the most expensive option and has no free tier.

Pros:

  • Most feature-rich
  • Excellent family/team plans
  • Travel mode for border crossings
  • Watchtower security monitoring

Cons:

  • No free tier
  • Most expensive
  • Autofill occasionally misses fields

Bitwarden

Bitwarden is the open-source champion. The free tier is genuinely usable, and the premium plan at $10/year is absurdly cheap. But the UI feels dated and autofill is less reliable.

Pros:

  • Open source and audited
  • Best free tier
  • Self-hosting option
  • $10/year premium

Cons:

  • UI needs modernization
  • Autofill is less reliable
  • Mobile app is clunky

My Recommendation

For most people: NordPass — best balance of price, usability, and security.

For power users: 1Password — if you need advanced features and do not mind paying more.

For budget/privacy purists: Bitwarden — open source, self-hostable, nearly free.

Why Password Managers Matter in 2026

With passkeys becoming mainstream, password managers are evolving into identity managers. All three support passkeys, but NordPass and 1Password handle the transition most smoothly.

If you are still reusing passwords or storing them in your browser, any of these three is a massive security upgrade.

Get NordPass (starting at $1.49/mo)
