I'm using system design to learn cloud engineering

I like to describe myself as a technical writer with knowledge of cloud infrastructure. But now, I don't know if I'm a technical writer with cloud experience or a cloud engineer with technical writing experience.

Still figuring that out.

Anyhooo...

I want to become really good at cloud engineering. Not just knowing how to use the tools, but understanding why they are used and how they affect everyday business goals and decisions.

It's the reason why I'm taking a system design approach to learning. I've spent the past three weeks learning the basics of Linux, Docker, CI/CD, Terraform, and AWS. I've noticed how easy it is to get stuck learning these concepts. The more you learn, the more you realize how much you DON'T KNOW!

Then you panic, try even harder to learn everything, and before you realize, you have a headache that simply won't go away.

So, I'm taking a different approach...system design. Understanding how business decisions affect which tools are used is a faster way to learn. The idea is to get my hands dirty with real-world or simulated real-world scenarios, so I'm not stuck in tutorial hell, learning things in a vacuum.

I'm also gonna gamify my approach. You might have heard of Bandit, a Linux game. It's been fun so far, and I've learnt a lot.

If any of you know of any similar games for other tools like Terraform, AWS, Docker, Git (tools related to Cloud and DevOps), do let me know.

I'm new here. Say 'hi'. Let's get to know each other. See you soon!
