Bun vs Node.js in 2026: What Actually Matters When You Pick a Runtime

Bun has spent the last couple of years being "the fast one", and Node.js has spent them being "the one everything runs on". In 2026 that framing is still roughly right, but the details decide which one you should start a project with.

Here's the 30-second version:

Where Bun clearly wins

Package installs. This is Bun's most consistently reproduced advantage: installs run roughly 20–35x faster than npm across benchmarks. On a big monorepo or in CI, that's minutes back on every run.

TypeScript with no build step. Bun executes .ts files directly. With Node.js you still reach for tsx, ts-node or a build step.

Integrated tooling. Runtime, package manager, test runner and bundler in one binary means fewer moving parts in a new project.

Where the gap is smaller than the headlines

Synthetic Express-style benchmarks show Bun handling around 4x Node's requests per second. In a more realistic test (a URL shortener), the numbers were about 12,400 req/s for Bun against 12,000 for Node. Your database and network usually dominate, so benchmark your own app before you migrate for speed.

Where Node.js still wins

Compatibility. Node is the reference implementation. Bun passes over 90% of Node's compatibility test suite, which is impressive, but that remaining slice is exactly where production surprises live.

Governance. Node.js sits under the vendor-neutral OpenJS Foundation. Bun is owned by Anthropic, which acquired it in December 2025. Some teams will see backing as reduced risk; others will want a foundation-governed runtime.

So which one?

  • New project, greenfield, you value speed and simplicity: Bun is a reasonable default.
  • Large enterprise app, maximum compatibility, long production track record: Node.js.
  • Either way: measure your workload, because headline benchmarks rarely survive contact with a real database.
