Both are excellent end-to-end testing frameworks. They're excellent at different things.
The 30-second version:
Browser support
Playwright drives Chromium, Firefox and WebKit through a single API, so Safari coverage comes built in. Cypress is strongest on Chromium, and its Firefox and WebKit support is less mature.
Parallel runs
Playwright includes parallel workers at no extra cost. With Cypress, robust parallel execution typically means the paid Cypress Cloud service. As your suite grows, that becomes a CI time and budget question.
Debugging
Cypress's time-travel debugger is the best in the category. Playwright's trace viewer and inspector are capable, but slightly less polished.
Multi-tab and contexts
Playwright handles multiple tabs, browser contexts and iframes natively. Cypress has historically been more constrained here, though it's improving.
So which one?
- New projects, cross-browser coverage including WebKit, free parallelisation: Playwright.
- Chromium-focused suites where debugging experience is the priority, or an existing Cypress investment: Cypress.
