I've been using DEV.to for a while, and one area that often feels inconsistent is the notification system.
Some common issues developers report:
- Notifications sometimes arrive late.
- Important interactions can get buried under less relevant notifications.
- Followed authors' posts may not always feel prominently surfaced.
- Email notifications and in-app notifications can feel out of sync.
- It can be difficult to distinguish high-priority engagement from routine activity.
Why It Matters
For a community platform, notifications are critical. They help creators:
- Engage with readers.
- Respond to comments quickly.
- Build relationships within the community.
- Stay informed about content that matters to them.
When notifications aren't timely or well-prioritized, engagement can suffer.
Possible Improvements
- Better notification categorization.
- Priority levels for comments, mentions, and reactions.
- More granular notification preferences.
- Improved real-time delivery.
- Smarter filtering based on user behavior.
DEV.to remains a great developer community, but refining the notification experience could make engagement much smoother for both readers and creators.
Have you experienced notification issues on DEV.to? What improvements would you like to see?

DEV notifications have taught me a valuable engineering lesson:
Never trust eventual consistency when you're waiting for someone to reply. ๐ญ
Half the time I find new comments by accident while checking if my previous comment got any likes. At this point my notification strategy is basically:
Works every time. Not efficient, but neither is debugging production at 2 AM. ๐
This is one of those developer experiences everyone understands instantly. ๐
We spend so much time building event-driven systems, yet when we're waiting for a reply, we immediately fall back to polling. :D
Haha, it's the only time polling suddenly feels like the most reliable architecture. ๐ Hopefully one day we can trust the event stream enough to stop hitting refresh every few minutes.
priceless ๐๐ฅ
Hey Divyanshi ๐
Funny enough, I didn't get notified about this post.
I've run into a few notification hiccups myself here and there. I follow you back as well, so I'm not really sure why this one never appeared for me.
Hopefully it's something they'll keep improving. Good feedback, and I'm sure the DEV team will be looking into it.
That's actually the perfect example of the problem!
Glad to hear I'm not the only one seeing these notification quirks. Thanks for sharing your experience โ hopefully DEV can get it sorted out soon.
How's my pfp btw, didi? ๐
Pokemon lover i like it ๐
Yep! Thanks didi!
This is great feedback!
Same Idea
Thatโs a good point! ๐
Thanks @webdeveloperhyper๐
I do get notifications, but sometimes delayed!
Yes, notifications get delayed.
The notification delay has trained me to manually refresh DEV like Iโm debugging a production issue. ๐
Iโd love to see priority notifications for comments and mentions. As a creator, those interactions matter far more than a generic activity notification. Better filtering and real-time delivery would make a huge difference.
At this point, manually refreshing DEV really does feel like troubleshooting a production bug.
I completely agree about prioritizing comments and mentions. Those are the interactions that actually drive conversations and community engagement. Better filtering plus near real-time notifications would make the experience much smoother for both readers and creators.
Hopefully that's something the team considers improving.
Yep. I agree with you.โบ๏ธ
In my opinion, it could be better as you conveyed.
I hope the team will certainly consider this improvement!!๐บ
Yep! How are you doing?
Hey!! I am doing well thank you for asking
What about you bro?
Same. But a bit busy ๐
Your profile pic is good. How can I set such animations as pfp?
Animated stickers
Ok, I did it! Thanx!!

Yes!!
The notification delay is the one thing that keeps me refreshing the page like it's 2010. Hope they fix this.
Exactly! That's the main issue I was trying to highlight.
