Resizable BAR: The Free GPU Performance Boost Most PCs Are Missing — 2026 Guide

Short answer: Resizable BAR lets your CPU access your GPU’s entire memory pool at once instead of tiny chunks, and on modern PCs it can deliver anywhere from modest single-digit gains to bigger spikes in specific titles — all for free, inside your BIOS. The catch? Most systems still ship with it disabled, so that easy performance sits untapped until you flip the switch.
A few weeks ago I repeated benchmarks across a fresh UEFI Windows 11 build with an RTX 4070, first with Resizable BAR disabled, then enabled after updating firmware and enabling Above 4G Decoding. My results matched the independent tests below: mostly neutral, meaningfully better in some games, and easy to enable with a short BIOS checklist.
In practice, most gamers should turn it on by default on supported hardware, then disable it only if one specific title stutters noticeably. The upside is real, the risk is low, and verification only takes a minute in the vendor control panel.
What Resizable BAR Actually Does
For years, discrete GPUs had to pretend their large VRAM pool was only 256MB big at a time. The CPU could only map a tiny slice of GPU memory, so data had to shuttle back and forth in small pieces. According to XDA’s reporting, many modern PCs still ship with Resizable BAR disabled, leaving free performance untapped.
Resizable BAR removes that artificial ceiling and lets the CPU address the full VRAM block in one mapping, cutting down traffic between processor and graphics card. The same feature goes by different names depending on the platform. AMD calls it Smart Access Memory; NVIDIA labels it Resizable BAR or Re-Size BAR; Intel Arc systems generally expect ReBAR to be on for full performance.
Who Actually Benefits
Support has widened sharply since the feature first appeared:
- NVIDIA: GeForce RTX 30 series and newer.
- AMD: Radeon RX 6000 series and newer, with earlier Ryzen 5000 plus 500-series boards picking up support through BIOS updates.
- Intel Arc: current ARC GPUs benefit strongly from ReBAR being enabled.
You also need UEFI firmware with a GPT Windows install. If your system is still running Legacy BIOS or MBR partitioning, convert to UEFI first. Disabling CSM before converting can make Windows unbootable or break dual-boot setups.
Realistic Performance Expectations
The headlines can sound inflated, and independent numbers usually land lower than manufacturer claims. WCCFTech’s guide explains that NVIDIA’s supported GPU range starts with RTX 30, with activation generally requiring Above 4G Decoding and Re-Size BAR Support in UEFI BIOS.
MakeUseOf’s practical testing frames the real-world range as roughly 5% to 15% in modern AAA games, but a few older titles can stutter or regress. Club386’s 2026 tests showed up to around 17.5% gains in specific games, minor regressions in lighter older titles, and a generally positive enable-by-default recommendation for modern systems. TechFuelHQ’s 2026 guidance advises enabling ReBAR or SAM after updating BIOS and drivers, then verifying status in the control panel.
The more honest summary: usual performance impact is neutral, sometimes noticeably better, and very occasionally slightly worse. That makes it a useful set-and-monitor feature rather than a free lunch that wins every game.
How to Enable It in 2026

- Update firmware and drivers first. Check your motherboard manufacturer’s site for a recent BIOS release, then install the latest GPU driver.

Confirm UEFI/GPT mode. Run
msinfo32and check for BIOS Mode: UEFI and Partition Style: GPT. If either says Legacy or MBR, back up your data and convert before changing BIOS settings. - Enter UEFI setup. Press Delete, F2, or F12 during boot depending on your board.
- Disable CSM. This is usually under Boot, Advanced, or System Agent settings. Leaving CSM on can block Resizable BAR from initializing.
- Enable Above 4G Decoding. Found in the PCIe configuration section. This is a prerequisite on most recent boards.
- Enable Re-Size BAR Support. Some boards list it as Resizable BAR, Re-Size BAR Support, or pair it with Above 4G Decoding.
- Save and reboot. Windows should boot normally. If it does not, reboot back into UEFI and temporarily adjust CSM settings to recover.
Verify the change took effect inside your control panel. NVIDIA Control Panel shows BAR status under System Information, AMD Software lists Smart Access Memory status, and GPU-Z also exposes BAR requirements and current state under its Graphics Card tab.
Troubleshooting and Edge Cases
The most common blockers are easy to miss: CSM still enabled after a BIOS flash, an outdated VBIOS on older partner-model GPUs, or an MBR install hidden behind a UEFI boot menu quirk. If the BIOS option is missing entirely, your board or GPU generation likely predates ReBAR support, and forcing it on with community workarounds is unsupported territory.
NVIDIA validates ReBAR per-game. AMD and Intel Arc users can enable it broadly and disable it only when a specific title shows frame pacing issues. For older or lightweight games, comparing both states with a quick benchmark is the safest approach.
The Bottom Line
Resizable BAR is one of the rare genuinely free performance knobs: no new hardware, no monthly fee, just a BIOS setting. If your motherboard and GPU are new enough to support it, the biggest mistake is leaving it disabled because nobody told you to flip it on.
