Grok 5 Release Date: What xAI Has Confirmed So Far
Grok 5 still does not have a confirmed public release date, and xAI's latest move has instead been to launch Grok 4.7 as its newest model for coding, agentic tasks and knowledge work. The September 21 release gives the company another major model generation to develop before the next version of Grok arrives.
xAI's official announcement describes Grok 4.7 as its most capable model for coding and knowledge work. The company says it uses a larger base model than Grok 4.6 and was trained with a longer reinforcement-learning run focused on difficult, extended tasks.
Grok 4.7 is the immediate story
The release matters because it changes the context around Grok 5. Rather than moving directly from one major version to the next, xAI is continuing to expand the Grok 4 generation while improving its infrastructure and developer access.
Grok 4.7 is available through xAI's API and has a 500,000-token context window, according to the company's developer documentation. It accepts text and image inputs and supports multiple reasoning-effort levels.
That makes the current xAI roadmap more substantial than a simple wait for the next numbered model. The company is adding capability to the existing generation while continuing research toward whatever comes after it.
Why Grok 5 remains difficult to pin down
There is a large amount of online speculation around the future model, including claims about its size, intelligence and potential capabilities. Those claims should be treated carefully because xAI has not published a formal Grok 5 specification or launch announcement.
Some of the strongest expectations around Grok 5 have come from Elon Musk's public comments about future xAI systems and artificial general intelligence. Those statements describe ambitions for future models, not independently demonstrated capabilities of a product that has not yet been released.
The current model is already a substantial upgrade
Grok 4.7 is not simply a minor maintenance release. xAI says the model uses a larger base model than Grok 4.6 and a longer reinforcement-learning process aimed at tasks that can require hours of work. The company has also positioned it specifically for coding and knowledge work rather than only conversational use.
Its developer release gives a clearer picture of where xAI is investing while Grok 5 remains undefined. The 500,000-token context window and support for text and image inputs put the emphasis on long-running workflows and larger amounts of information rather than only short chatbot exchanges.
That makes it premature to judge Grok 5 by rumored benchmark numbers or parameter counts. Until xAI publishes the next model, the measurable story is what the company is shipping now, and that is Grok 4.7.
xAI's model cycle is still moving
The company's official news page shows how quickly its product line has been developing. Grok 4.6 was followed by Grok 4.7, while xAI has also continued releasing tools around Grok Bot, voice transcription and developer services.
That means there is no reliable basis for treating an old Grok 5 date as current. As of September 27, 2026, xAI's own public material confirms Grok 4.7 but does not give a dated launch for Grok 5.
The next meaningful update will therefore be an official xAI announcement, not another recycled release-date rumor. Until then, Grok 5 remains a future model rather than an imminent product launch.
