Claude Duet: Anthropic's New Proactive AI Agent — What It Is and How to Join the Waitlist

Originally published at https://theglitchfixer.blogspot.com/2026/10/claude-duet-anthropics-new-proactive-ai.html

Anthropic launched a new kind of Claude on October 21, 2026: Claude Duet, a proactive AI agent now rolling out as a research preview. Instead of waiting for you to type a prompt, Duet comes to you — it sends a morning briefing drawn from your connected apps, keeps working on tasks after you close the app, and checks in only when something actually needs your attention.

It lands in the middle of an agent arms race: OpenAI Dots, Meta's Muse, and Google's agent push are all converging on the same idea. Anthropic's answer is deliberately work-first — built for professionals and small-business owners drowning in busywork, not for booking restaurant tables.

Claude Duet is a standalone proactive agent: a separate experience from regular Claude, delivered as its own apps on iPhone, Android, and the web. As Anthropic put it in its announcement: "It comes to you with what needs your attention, completes tasks you ask of it, keeps working when you step away, and checks with you before it acts on your behalf."

How Claude Duet actually works

The day starts with the briefing. Duet scans your connected email, calendar, and work apps and sends one short rundown: the items that matter, the deadlines approaching, the threads that need a reply. You can ask it to prepare draft replies, then check back every few hours for developments you asked it to flag.

The part that separates it from a chatbot is the background machine. Duet runs inside its own cloud-based computer — a virtual machine that keeps working after you close the app or shut your laptop. That is what makes the "keeps working when you step away" promise real: it is not a tab you left open, it is a separate machine doing the task.

It is designed to be interruptible on your terms. Rather than streaming everything it does, Duet judges which events deserve your attention and asks for permission before acting on your behalf. When it needs a decision — approving a payment, sending a message, signing a document — it comes back to you instead of guessing.

Under the hood, Duet runs on Claude Opus 5.5, Anthropic's flagship model, and it uses the same memories, skills, and connectors as regular Claude. It can even search your past conversations so you do not have to repeat context. Finished work lands in a Make tab for review and editing; a separate Tasks tab tracks progress, with completion left for you to mark.

How to get Claude Duet: the waitlist

Access is limited, and deliberately so. Claude Duet is a research preview — Anthropic's word for "real product, early days" — and for now it is available only through a waitlist open to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US. Invitations go out in waves, so joining the waitlist does not mean instant access; Anthropic has not given a timeline for how fast the waves move.

Three things to know before you join the line:

  • You need a paid Claude subscription. The preview is restricted to Pro and Max plans. It is included at no additional cost beyond the subscription — but read the pricing section below, because "no additional cost" comes with an asterisk.
  • US only, for now. The rollout starts in the United States. Team and Enterprise plans are explicitly not included yet, though Anthropic says it plans to expand to those subscriptions later.
  • Join through the Claude app. The waitlist lives inside the Claude experience on iOS, Android, and web — check the Claude app or Anthropic's announcements for the current signup entry point, since preview access points can move during a rollout.

Is Claude Duet free?

The feature itself costs nothing extra: it ships inside your existing Pro or Max subscription. The catch is usage. Anthropic says Duet counts toward your plan's existing usage limits — including work it performs in the background — and warns that this could make you reach those limits "sooner than with chat alone." A busy agent silently burning quota overnight is the most practical cost of the preview, so keep an eye on your usage dashboard if you get in.

What Claude Duet connects to

Anthropic says Duet works with more than 6,000 connectors and plugins through the Claude Marketplace — the same connector ecosystem as regular Claude — including:

  • Email and messaging: Gmail and Slack for the morning brief, thread monitoring, and drafted replies.
  • Money: Stripe (spot unpaid invoices and draft payment reminders), QuickBooks, and Gusto (prepare payroll information for review).
  • Sales: HubSpot for follow-ups based on a deal's history.
  • Professional network: LinkedIn.
  • Commerce: Shopify — Duet can even complete purchases through Shop Pay, with your approval.

Beyond connections, Duet can build things: financial and sales forecasts, dashboards, prototypes, and web apps. Small-business examples Anthropic shared include accounting, customer support, marketing, and invoices across multiple locations.

The safety rails: what it asks permission for

Duet is designed to ask before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes anything. The approval step is the product's defining trait — the agent proposes, you dispose.

There is also a new layer of automated screening. Anthropic released a classifier that screens each message to stop sensitive information from leaking out: by default, Duet turns down requests involving credit card numbers and government IDs. And some actions are off-limits entirely — Duet will not trade securities or transfer funds between accounts, even if you approve them.

On the access side, Anthropic says Duet does not directly touch your passwords or sign-in tokens; it works through the connected apps' official integrations rather than logging in as you. The honest caveat, from Anthropic itself: the agent "might misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent." An approval gate is only as good as the judgment behind it, which is why the sensitive actions always route through you.

Claude Duet vs OpenAI Dots vs Meta Muse

  • OpenAI Dots — announced at DevDay on September 29, always-on agents built on GPT-6 Astra with 4,000+ app plugins and desktop-based creation. Dots leans toward everyday assistance and personal errands.
  • Meta Muse — Meta's frontier personal agent, pitched around daily life and personal tasks.
  • Claude Duet — the work-first entry: morning briefings, background execution on its own virtual machine, 6,000+ connectors skewed toward business apps, and an explicit "asks before it acts" approval model.

The most telling difference is one Anthropic volunteers: Duet is weaker at personal errands like booking tickets than its rivals. Dots and Muse want your daily life; Duet wants your workday.

The catches you should know

  • It is a research preview. Expect bugs, missing features, and behavior changes without warning. You cannot watch its browser use as it happens yet, so background work is a black box until it reports back.
  • Background work burns quota. Everything Duet does — including the tasks it runs while you sleep — counts against your Pro or Max usage limits. Anthropic's own warning: you may hit your limits "sooner than with chat alone."
  • Access is narrow. US only, Pro/Max only, waitlist only, invitations in waves. Team and Enterprise customers wait. No public timeline for expansion.
  • It can misjudge urgency. Anthropic cautions that Duet "might misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent" — the morning brief is a starting point, not a verdict.
  • Personal errands are the weak spot. If your dream agent books flights and grabs concert tickets, Duet is not that agent yet. Its rivals cover that ground better today.

Should you join the waitlist?

If you are already paying for Claude Pro or Max and your work lives in Gmail, Slack, Stripe, or HubSpot, yes — join the waitlist. The morning brief plus background execution is a genuinely new capability, and as a research preview it costs nothing beyond the subscription you already have. Just watch your usage limits once you are in.

If you are not a subscriber, or you want an agent for personal errands rather than work, there is no reason to rush. Duet's work-first design is its identity; the broader agent race will give you more options soon.
