Gartner published its first-ever Market Guide for Guardian Agents yesterday. Orchid Security was named a Representative Vendor. The category did not exist six months ago.
This matters because it is the first time an analyst firm has formally defined a market around securing AI agent identity and access.
What Gartner Says
From the market guide:
"AI agents introduce new risks that outpace human review, yet most enterprises are unprepared to manage them due to fragmented organizational structures and ongoing challenges with discovery."
The guide identifies four key requirements:
- Human Operator Attribution — every agent must map to a responsible human owner
- Activity Audit — log, monitor, and report on all agent activity
- Posture Management — centralized identities, strong auth, least privilege
- Runtime Inspection — enforce policy during live agent interactions
What Orchid Built
Orchid's five principles map directly to Gartner's requirements:

The Convergence This Week
Three things happened in the same 48 hours:
- Gartner created the Guardian Agents market category
- Proofpoint launched AI Security with an Agent Integrity Framework — intent-based detection across endpoints, browsers, and MCP connections
- The Agents of Chaos study results got picked up by Kiteworks, showing that a researcher compromised an agent in 45 seconds by changing a display name
The convergence is real: the industry now agrees that agent identity is a security problem. The disagreement is about the architecture.
The Architecture Question
The enterprise vendors (Orchid, Proofpoint, Okta, 1Password) are building centralized guardian agents — platform-controlled identity that monitors and governs agent behavior from above.
This works inside one organization. It breaks in three scenarios:
Cross-organizational agent interaction. When Agent A from Company X needs to verify Agent B from Company Y, whose guardian agent arbitrates? Neither company trusts the other's identity provider.
Open-source agents. An agent running on someone's laptop does not have an enterprise identity platform. It needs self-sovereign identity that works without a centralized authority.
Agent-to-agent trust. Guardian agents can verify authentication ("is this Agent A?"). They cannot evaluate trust ("should I rely on Agent A's output?"). Trust requires behavioral history, not just credential checking.
This is where cryptographic identity protocols fill the gap. Not as a replacement for enterprise identity — as the interoperability layer that makes cross-boundary trust possible.

The Guardian Agent market is real and important. But it is one layer in a multi-layer problem. Identity that stops at the organizational boundary is not identity — it is access control.
The Colorado AI Act Factor
One detail from RockCyber's analysis: the Colorado AI Act establishes a "reasonable care" standard for high-risk AI systems, effective June 30, 2026. Widely adopted standards become evidence of reasonable care in court.
This means the standards that emerge in the next 90 days will have legal weight. If Guardian Agents become the standard for enterprise agent governance, organizations that do not implement them may face liability.
But if the standard only covers intra-organization identity, cross-boundary agent interactions remain in a legal gray zone. Open protocols that provide verifiable, portable identity could fill that gap — and become part of the "reasonable care" standard themselves.
