Strata Says Your IAM Was Not Built for AI Agents. Here Are the Six Risks They Identified.

Strata published a comprehensive guide to agentic AI risks through Security Boulevard yesterday. It reads like a checklist of everything enterprise security teams have been avoiding.

Six risks. All of them are identity problems.

The six risks

1. Unmanaged agent identities

Every AI agent that interacts with enterprise systems needs an identity. Most enterprises have no consistent answer for how to provision, manage, or retire those identities. Agents operate with over-permissioned credentials, repurposed service accounts, or no formal identity at all.

2. Privilege escalation and over-permissioning

Developers grant agents broad permissions to keep things simple. The principle of least privilege, well-understood for humans, has no standard implementation for ephemeral agents that spin up and down dynamically.

3. Prompt injection and agent manipulation

Malicious instructions embedded in content that agents process can redirect agent behavior. A compromised agent in a multi-agent pipeline can propagate bad actions through the entire chain.

4. Agent-to-agent trust gaps

When Agent A calls Agent B, there is no standard mechanism for mutual verification. Most multi-agent systems assume every participant in the pipeline is trustworthy. That assumption breaks under any adversarial condition.

5. Shadow AI

Employees deploying agent tools without IT approval. You cannot govern what you cannot see. Discovery has to precede policy.

6. Insufficient auditability

Every agent should leave a complete log of intent, identity, and outcome. Most do not. The gap between what an agent did and what you can prove it did is a liability gap.

What is interesting about this list

These six risks are not novel individually. What is notable is that an enterprise identity vendor is publishing them as a unified framework with a clear thesis: existing IAM tools were not built for this.

Human-centric identity services cannot handle ephemeral agents, MCP-layer authorization, or end-to-end agentic workflow traceability at scale. This is not a feature request. It is an architectural mismatch.

Strata's framing also explicitly calls out the MCP layer. The Model Context Protocol creates trust boundaries by design, and the recent CVEs in mcp-atlassian (4 million downloads, arbitrary file write via SSRF) demonstrate that those boundaries are being exploited in the wild.

Where the industry is converging

The pre-RSAC week has produced a remarkable concentration of agent identity announcements:

  • Strata: This risk guide + identity controls for AI agents
  • Teleport: Beams — Firecracker VMs with built-in agent identity (MVP April 30)
  • VentureBeat: Four-layer governance matrix post-Meta incident
  • CrowdStrike Falcon Shield: Runtime agent discovery
  • Okta for AI Agents: OAuth token management (April 30)
  • Microsoft Agent 365: Control plane (GA May 1)

All six are solving different slices of the same problem. None of them interoperate.

The pattern that keeps recurring: each vendor closes one or two of Strata's six risks. Nobody closes all six. Agent discovery and credential lifecycle are getting coverage. Mutual agent-to-agent verification and behavioral trust scoring remain open.

What is missing

Strata's Risk #4 (agent-to-agent trust gaps) and Risk #6 (auditability) point at the hardest unsolved problems.

Mutual agent-to-agent authentication requires each agent to cryptographically verify the other's identity before exchanging data or delegating tasks. This is not the same as authenticating to infrastructure. It is peer-to-peer, and it needs to work across organizational boundaries where no shared identity provider exists.

Behavioral auditability means more than logging. It means every trust decision is a signed artifact that other systems can verify. When four engines evaluate the same borderline agent and three deny while one permits, the divergence should be classifiable from the artifacts alone without needing access to each engine's internal scoring logic.

Both of these are active areas of work in the open-source agent identity space. AIP's trust handshake protocol handles mutual authentication. The cross-protocol verification project on GitHub (four engines, mutual artifact verification) is addressing cross-engine auditability.
