I Built a Free Online Whiteboard for Sprint Planning, Brainstorming & Diagramming
A lightweight browser-based whiteboard that opens instantly — no signup, no installation, just start drawing.
As developers, we often need a place to quickly sketch an idea before writing code.
Sometimes it's planning a sprint.
Sometimes it's designing a database.
Sometimes it's simply drawing a few boxes and arrows to explain a feature to a teammate.
The problem I kept facing was that most online whiteboard tools felt too heavy for quick brainstorming. Before I could even start drawing, I usually had to create a workspace, create a board, navigate multiple menus, or sign in.
I wanted something simpler.
So I built ToolAska Whiteboard.
Why I Built It
The goal wasn't to compete with enterprise collaboration platforms.
Instead, I wanted a whiteboard that is:
- Fast
- Browser-based
- No signup required
- Easy to use
- Works on any modern browser
Sometimes all you need is a blank canvas to think visually.
Current Features
The whiteboard currently includes:
- Freehand Drawing
- Sticky Notes
- Text Tool
- Shapes
- Lines & Connectors
- Multiple Colors
- Zoom & Pan
- Undo / Redo
- Export as PNG
- Save & Load JSON
- Fullscreen Mode
Everything runs directly inside your browser.
Example: Sprint Planning
One of my favorite use cases is planning software sprints.
Instead of immediately creating tickets, I first organize the entire sprint visually.
The board is divided into simple sections:
- Sprint Goal
- Backlog
- To Do
- In Progress
- Testing
- Done
Then I place tasks as sticky notes and connect dependent work using arrows.
This gives a much clearer overview before moving into project management software.
Other Ways I Use It
Although I originally built it for sprint planning, I now use it almost every day for different tasks.
Some examples include:
- System Architecture
- API Flow Diagrams
- Database Design
- Brainstorming Sessions
- User Journey Mapping
- UI Planning
- Meeting Notes
- Teaching Technical Concepts
- Product Idea Validation
If your thought process starts with "Let me quickly sketch this...", a whiteboard is often the fastest tool.
Why Not Use Existing Whiteboards?
There are already excellent tools like Miro, FigJam, and Excalidraw.
They solve many collaboration problems.
But my goal was different.
I wanted something that follows one simple workflow:
Open → Draw → Export
No unnecessary setup.
No distractions.
Just ideas.
What's Next?
I'm actively improving the whiteboard and planning to add features like:
- Real-time Collaboration
- Ready-made Templates
- Keyboard Shortcuts
- More Diagram Components
- UML & Flowchart Libraries
- Better Mobile Support
- Performance Improvements
I'd Love Your Feedback
If you regularly use whiteboard tools, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
- What feature do you use the most?
- What's the biggest pain point with current whiteboard tools?
- What feature do you wish existed?
Your feedback will directly influence the next version.
