Hey all!
This is my maiden voyage here on Dev.to, and with it I'd love to gather some feedback from the community! I'm a freelance writer, and I maintain my own web presence in accordance. That website houses my portfolio, an introductory bio, and my qualifications.
With the popularity of dark-interface design rising, I've decided to experiment with building a dark mode for my site. We're still in the concept phase, but I do think I have a great foundation here. That's where you all come in.
This site is very much copy driven, and thus readability is very important. I know white text on black can be visually jarring - thus the background isn't pure black, and the body text is a lighter gray. Hopefully this alleviates that issue.
I'm not certain if there are better forums for this, but I'd really appreciate it if y'all could sound off in the comments!
I'd like to pose two main questions:
1) Do you have any specific feedback to make Dark Mode more user friendly?
2) Do you prefer Light Mode or Dark Mode?
Currently, I use @media (prefers-color-scheme: dark)
to detect the system preferences. It's the easiest way thus far for me to design a working dark mode. Accordingly, the site will automatically load the appropriate design based on detected preferences.
Here are two links to Imgur albums with the appropriate screenshots. If I'm totally butchering this posting process, also feel free to let me know (as this is the internet, after all):
Website Light Mode
Website Dark Mode
Thanks a ton! I look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts, and building an awesome user experience.
Cheers,
Tyler

I have collected (and done myself) a lot of user research on dark mode in my article. You might find it informative.
