Designing an AI Tool That Doesn’t Just Validate Feelings

Most AI tools that respond to emotional input do one of two things:
1. Over-validate.
2. Offer generic advice.

Neither reduces pressure effectively.

While building Unjam, I focused on a different design principle:

Clarity before comfort.

The goal wasn’t to make users feel heard.
It was to make them think clearly again.

Unjam’s flow:
1. User writes what’s bothering them.
2. The system extracts the underlying core issue.
3. It explains why that issue feels overwhelming.
4. It suggests one realistic next step.

The hardest challenge wasn’t generating text.

It was avoiding vagueness.

Specificity reduces anxiety.
Generic language increases it.

The product is still evolving, but the direction is clear:
Interrupt the spiral. Restore structured thinking.
