A big-tips night can still be a bad shift — here's how to tell

For drivers and delivery workers, tips feel like the win. A night with big tips feels like a good night, and a night with small tips feels like a bad one. That feeling is misleading, because tips are only one half of what you earned.

The real question for any shift is not how big the tips were. It is what you kept after everything the shift cost you, for every hour the shift really took.

Start by splitting the pay in your head. Base pay is the predictable part. Tips are the variable part. Together they are your gross pay — but gross pay is not profit. From that total, subtract fuel, tolls, parking, food you bought because you were working, and any other cost the shift created. What is left is your net profit. Then divide that by all the hours the shift really took, including waiting between jobs, sitting between deliveries, and the empty miles back — not just the hours you were paid for.

An illustrative example shows why this matters. Say one night pays $45 in base pay plus $25 in tips: $70 gross. Fuel and tolls cost $16, leaving $54 net. If that shift really took 4.5 hours, the honest rate is $12 an hour — even though the tips felt great. Another night pays $50 in base pay plus only $10 in tips: $60 gross. Costs are $8, leaving $52 net over 3.5 real hours, which is nearly $15 an hour. The second night is the better shift, even though its tips were smaller.

That is why it helps to record base pay and tips separately instead of lumping them into one number. When you can see them apart, you can tell whether a good night was good because of the base, because of the tips, or because the costs and waiting time stayed low. And when you compare shifts by net profit per real hour, the pattern over a week tells you which kinds of shifts are actually worth taking — not just which ones felt good on the night.

I built a free tool that does this math for gig workers and drivers. ShiftLog records each shift's pay, costs, and time, and shows the real net profit per shift, with no account needed and everything stored offline on your phone: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.shiftlog.app
