A client once told us, just copy this popular app, build the exact same thing.
We said no.
Here is why, and what we built instead.
Copying an existing app sounds like the fast and cheap option. In reality it creates three serious problems.
First, legal risk. Many apps have patented features, registered trademarks, or unique design elements. Copying them can get your app removed from the Play Store, or worse, get you sued.
Second, you inherit someone else's mistakes. Every app has bugs, outdated features, and parts users complain about. If you copy it blindly, you copy the problems too.
Third, and this is the big one, you build something with zero competitive advantage. If your app is identical to another one, why would anyone switch to yours.
So instead of copying, we sat down with the client and asked one question. What does your specific business actually need.
Turns out, he did not need the same app. He needed three of its features, combined with something none of the existing apps had, built specifically around how his customers actually behave.
We built that instead.
Six months later his app has better reviews than the one he originally wanted to copy.
This is the difference between building software and actually solving a problem.
At Utilizor, we do not just take orders. We ask the right questions first, then build the right solution.
