Interview with creator of CocoonWeaver app about safe data storage

tags:: #dataStorage #dataSafety

  1. What factors made you chose to use local data storage for content? ( safety, trust, cost?)

ā Privacy at its core. The core philosophy of the app is to enable people to be more vulnerable with themselves whilst using technology. A lot of our users see cocoonweaver as a way to self reflect, talk to themselves, decompress mental states, journal (day or dream) and even though it would be easy and inexpensive to enable backups to clouds etc, itā€™s the psychology of all the data being stored locally, on device, that allows our users to express themselves more freely in a deeper way, whether itā€™s with voice or tapping to write. In this way, in the deeper sense, cocoonweaver can be stronger in being a platform for self transformation. A safe space.

  1. Which storage size provisions did you make, if any? (Think size of each file)

Our voice notes are compressed and take up very little data. Text files anyway. Storage is limited to local available storage. We are working on a longterm solution to manage space, but it is not a priority as it would require a user to use cocoonweaver for years to accumulate enough data to have any issues. Of course, people can manually delete items.

  1. Was there a difference in implementing local data storage between iOS and android? ( which packages did you use, if any? Pain points in implementing local data storage between platforms ?)

ā Itā€™s straight forward in both platforms. Android, as always, takes a little longer.

  1. Did you use a cross platform solution for development? Why or why not?

We are working on it. Why? Because people should be able to access their data on different platforms - but privacy comes first and we are working on solutions they involve decentralized communication.

[END of interview]

CocoonWeaver is a beautifully designed app and it is great help to take voice notes on the go. The app is available for free on iOS and Android. Give it a download.

Disclaimer: This is NOT a sponsored post, this interview is just a deeper dive into the considerations one can face when making an architectural decision in data storage, making safety a top priority.
