Training a Human: How Interacting with AI Rewires Our Own Communication Habits for Better or Worse


You draft an email to a colleague: "Need the report when you have a chance. Thanks!" You pause. Delete. Rewrite: "Could you please share the Q3 sales report by 3 PM tomorrow? I need it for the client presentation. Let me know if that timeline doesn't work." Clearer. More efficient. Less room for ambiguity. You hit send and think nothing of it.
But where did that clarity come from? It's the same muscle you've been flexing all week with your AI prompts. "Act as a data analyst. Summarize this spreadsheet. Focus on Q3 trends. Format as bullet points. Exclude outliers above 3 standard deviations." The machine demands precision, and you've been training for hours.
We talk about training AI, but we rarely discuss how AI is training us. The habits we build in prompt engineering-specificity, structure, context-setting, constraint definition are seeping into our human communication. The question is whether this is making us better communicators or just more robotic versions of ourselves.
Let's examine the invisible curriculum of human-AI interaction and what it means for the way we talk to each other.
The Good: The Precision Dividend
Learning to prompt effectively teaches skills that translate directly to clearer human communication.

  1. The Death of Vagueness Vague prompts yield useless outputs. You learn this fast. "Write something about marketing" produces garbage. "Write a 300-word LinkedIn post about content marketing for B2B SaaS companies targeting CTOs, using a thought-leadership tone" produces something usable. This lesson doesn't stay in the chat window. You start noticing your own vague requests to humans. "Let's circle back" becomes "Can we meet Thursday at 2 PM to discuss the budget?" The habit of specificity becomes automatic.
  2. Context as Courtesy A good prompt sets the stage: role, audience, goal, constraints. You wouldn't ask an AI to "write a contract" without context; you'd tell it what kind of contract, for what jurisdiction, with what parties. This spills over. Your emails now begin with context: "Regarding the Acme project, we need to resolve the following three issues before Friday." You're not just making a request; you're briefing your human colleague like you'd brief an AI. And they appreciate it.

A Contrarian Take: The Bad Isn't What You Think. It's Not "Robotic Speech." The common fear is that we'll start talking to humans like we talk to AI - stiff, transactional, devoid of warmth. The danger isn't that we become robotic; it's that we become exhausting, treating every human interaction like we're programming a machine. The Gray Zone: Where Transfer Gets Tricky Not all prompting habits translate cleanly. The "Role" Framing: Prompting an AI to "act as a CEO" or "act as a therapist" is a powerful way to shape output. But try this in human conversation. "Before we begin this meeting, I need you to act as a strategic advisor." Good luck. Humans have fixed identities and relationships. Asking them to perform a role can feel manipulative or bizarre. The Iteration Loop: With AI, you can iterate endlessly: "Too formal. Too casual. Add more data. Remove the jargon." This is part of the process. With humans, endless revision requests signal indecision, perfectionism, or disrespect for their time. The iteration habit must be suppressed, not transferred. Negative Prompting: Telling an AI what you don't want is a precision tool. Telling a human what you don't want, without also telling them what you do want, is just criticism. "Don't be late" lands differently than "Please be on time by 3 PM." The negative framing, useful with AI, can feel accusatory with people. The Integration Challenge: Becoming Bilingual The goal isn't to reject the communication habits we learn from AI. The goal is to become bilingual, fluent in both the language of machines and the language of humans, and skilled at knowing which to use when. When to Use AI-Honed Precision: In professional emails where clarity prevents costly misunderstandings. In project briefs and specifications. In any communication where the cost of ambiguity is high.

Your Communication Audit: What's Leaking?
This week, pay attention to your human communications with fresh eyes.
Capture a Sample: Save a few emails, Slack messages, or even voice memos you've sent recently.
Analyze for AI Transfer: Where do you see the hallmarks of prompt engineering? Unusual specificity? Structured formatting? Context-setting that feels excessive?
Calibrate for Audience: For each communication, ask: Did this person need this level of detail? Would less have been more? Did I communicate clarity, or did I communicate a lack of trust?
Adjust Intentionally: In your next human interaction, try adding a little more ambiguity, and see if the relationship survives. You might find that trust, once earned, is a more efficient communication channel than any prompt.

We began by training AI to understand us. Now, inevitably, AI is training us to be understood. The feedback loop is closing. The question isn't whether this is happening, it is. The question is whether we'll master the new dialects or be mastered by them.
