The call started like any other. Three weeks of demos, follow-up emails, a custom proposal — we were deep into the final evaluation stage. Each alert routes automatically by change type to the right channel — sales, product, or marketing — in a format the team can act on by 9am.


H2 4 — The Architecture: Apify Snapshots + n8n Diff Engine + LLM Classification + Tiered Slack Routing

Five components connected in a linear pipeline:

Component 1 — Competitor URL registry (Google Sheet)
One Google Sheet is the configuration layer. Columns: competitor_name, page_type (pricing / features / positioning), url, monitor_frequency (daily or weekly). Up to 10 competitors × 3 pages = 30 URLs. Pricing pages on daily schedule, feature and positioning pages on weekly.

Component 2 — Apify web-scraper (page snapshot)
apify/web-scraper uses Puppeteer-based rendering — required for JavaScript-rendered pricing pages (React, Next.js, Webflow). Configuration: startUrls from your URL registry, maxDepth: 0, pageFunction extracting full body text. For simple HTML pricing pages, apify/cheerio-scraper is 10× faster and cheaper — use cheerio where it returns complete content, fall back to web-scraper where it doesn't.

Component 3 — Diff engine (n8n Code node)
Compare current snapshot against the previous snapshot stored in Google Sheets. Calculate change_magnitude_pct = (changed_words / total_words) × 100. Filter: changes below 2% are dynamic widget noise — log "no material change" and stop. Changes at 2%+ pass through to classification.

Component 4 — LLM classification (OpenAI API node)
Diff text passes to GPT-4o with a structured prompt classifying changes into: PRICE_CHANGE, PLAN_ADDED, PLAN_REMOVED, FEATURE_ADDED, FEATURE_REMOVED, TRIAL_TERMS_CHANGE, POSITIONING_CHANGE, OTHER. Returns JSON: {categories: [], summary: ''}. Cost: approximately $0.01 per classification run.

Component 5 — Tiered Slack routing + Google Sheet log
Switch node routes by category: PRICE_CHANGE or PLAN_ADDED/REMOVED → immediate #competitive-intel alert; FEATURE_ADDED/REMOVED → #product; POSITIONING_CHANGE → #marketing; OTHER → Google Sheet only, no Slack noise. Friday 4pm, a weekly digest aggregates all changes from the week and posts a ranked summary to #competitive-intel.


H2 5 — Step-by-Step Setup: Running in Under 2 Hours

Step 1 — Build the URL registry (15 min): One Google Sheet, one row per page. For each direct competitor: pricing page (daily), core features page (weekly), homepage (weekly). 10 competitors = 30 rows.

Step 2 — Configure Apify web-scraper (20 min): Create a new web-scraper task. Set startUrls to your pricing page URLs. Set maxDepth: 0. Add a pageFunction returning document.body.innerText. Test each URL — confirm the returned text includes actual pricing numbers. Switch JavaScript-dependent pages to web-scraper (Puppeteer) from cheerio where needed. Schedule: daily 6am for pricing URLs, weekly Monday 7am for feature/positioning URLs.

Step 3 — Snapshot storage (15 min): Second sheet in your file: snapshots. Columns: url, snapshot_date, page_content_hash (MD5 for fast comparison), page_content_text. After each run, n8n writes the current snapshot. On next run, compare hashes — identical hash stops the workflow; different hash continues.

Step 4 — Build the diff engine (20 min): In an n8n Code node, split previous and current text into word arrays, compute word-change count, calculate change_magnitude_pct. Threshold: below 2% → log "below threshold" and terminate. At 2%+ → pass diff text downstream.

Step 5 — OpenAI classification node (15 min): n8n HTTP Request node to OpenAI completions. Parse the returned categories[] and summary fields as output for downstream Switch routing.

Step 6 — Slack routing + weekly digest (20 min): Switch node with four branches per category group (see Component 5 above). Add a Friday 4pm scheduled workflow that reads all current-week changes from Google Sheets and posts the ranked weekly digest to #competitive-intel.


H2 6 — Output and Scope: What This Covers and What It Does Not

"I run competitive intelligence for a $3M ARR SaaS company. We have 7 direct competitors. I'm currently manually checking their pricing pages every 2–3 weeks and maintaining a Google Sheet. LLM classification accuracy: GPT-4o correctly classifies change categories approximately 85–92% of the time on pricing page diffs. Remaining cases return as OTHER and log for human review — under 30 seconds per event with the raw diff included.


H2 7 — Scope Limits and JavaScript-Rendered Pages

One technical note worth flagging before setup: modern SaaS pricing pages built on React, Next.js, or Webflow render their content via JavaScript after initial page load. For these pages, apify/web-scraper (Puppeteer-based) is required. apify/cheerio-scraper fetches the initial HTML and will return a nearly empty page for JavaScript-rendered content, missing all pricing data.

The test method: run cheerio on a candidate URL and check whether the returned text includes actual plan names and prices. If not, switch that URL to web-scraper. The setup guide included with the product walks through this test for each URL type.
