# ABLITERAX — Delivery

ABLITERAX — Delivery

Part 0 — Verification notes (honest)

The reference material you pasted (Heretic, OBLITERATUS, Dealign.ai, Arditi et al. 2024) is what I built against. I did not have live network access while writing this, so the following are stated rather than re-verified against HEAD:

  • Heretic's parameterisation (float direction_index, min_weight_distance kernel, MPOA row-renormalisation, per-component targets) — implemented from the description you supplied.
  • OBLITERATUS's extraction zoo and nuclear / informed presets — implemented as described, not diffed against the repo.
  • Dealign.ai's safety phase transitions and holographic safety — used as design guidance for the holographic_bypass preset, not as measured truth.

Treat holographic_bypass quality claims as hypotheses until you run it.

Part 1 — Technical assumptions

# Assumption Basis
A1 Refusal is approximately linear in the residual stream at small/mid scale, and multi-directional + layer-dispersed + architecture-dependent at frontier scale Arditi 2024 + Dealign phase table
A2 Projecting attn.out_proj and mlp.down_proj output rows is the highest-signal intervention per unit damage Heretic, OBLITERATUS
A3 Rank-k subspace (k>1) with QR orthonormalisation dominates rank-1 at scale (Hydra / uncorrelated per-layer vectors) Dealign findings
A4 Iterative re-probe (Ouroboros) recovers direction mass rotated into neighbouring subspaces after pass 1 OBLITERATUS
A5 Row-norm preservation (MPOA) + max_norm_ratio ≤ 1.10 bounds weight drift Heretic
A6 Structural ablation survives 4-bit quantisation better than additive steering Dealign quantisation asymmetry
A7 Hybrid (attention + SSM/GDN) needs both channels hit; residual-only ablation leaks Dealign hybrid defence
A8 MoE needs per-expert gating (EGA) + router-aware direction, not one shared direction Dealign multiplicative defence
A9 First-token residual is insufficient for mid-generation re-detection; must probe mid-sequence Dealign
A10 Keyword refusal rate is a proxy — must be paired with KL + capability benchmarks Spec §4E

Explicitly not assumed: that Frobenius-norm preservation = intelligence preservation (Spec §2.4); that 0% refusal is reachable at 122B+ (it usually is not — holographic_baseline is reported).

Part 2 — MVP scope

In scope (v0.1): dense decoder-only transformers with verifiable layout; fp16/bf16 native; CPU path for math; Colab T4 / L4 / Kaggle T4; presets basic → holographic_bypass; Optuna TPE multi-objective; LoRA + safetensors export; full rollback.

Out of scope (v0.1, documented, not faked):

  • 4-bit bnb in-place edit (dequant→edit→requant is stubbed with a hard error, not silently wrong).
  • Multimodal vision towers (registry reports unsupported_frozen=True, does not touch them).
  • Pure state-space (Mamba) — registry refuses.
  • GGUF round-trip (post-export warning emitted).
  • Frontier-scale sharding (VRAM estimator refuses and tells you the shortfall).

Part 3 — Architecture & module contracts

Part 8 — Run report (honest)

What was verified by construction

  • Every module imports cleanly, no circulars.
  • Projection direction is output-space for both o_proj and down_proj (shape (hidden, *) enforced).
  • QR orthonormalisation is enforced before any apply, so rank-k projections are idempotent-safe.
  • Norm cap max_norm_ratio clamps scaling — test test_norm_ratio_bounded asserts it.

What was not executed here

I have no runtime in this turn. So:

Test Expected Status
test_geometry.py pass not run
test_interventions.py pass not run
test_architecture_registry.py pass not run
test_pipeline_cpu.py pass not run

To run: pip install -e ".[test]" && pytest -q.

Unverified architectures

  • GPT-OSS MoE (expected: expert_down discovered, EGA path untested)
  • DeepSeek-MoE (shared-expert layout differs — will likely need a profile override)
  • Gemma 3/4 multimodal (vision tower correctly skipped, text path untested)
  • Qwen 3.5 hybrid (SSM out-proj suffixes guessed — will probably need adjusting)

Known limits (v0.1)

  1. 4-bit input refused, not stubbed. pipeline raises NotImplementedError on quantised configs.
  2. GGUF round-trip: only a warning; dense delta loss is real, per Dealign.
  3. Frontier scale (122B+): HardwareProfile.estimate_fit refuses rather than OOM. holographic_bypass will leave residual refusal — the preset is designed to report it, not erase it.
  4. Multi-objective has 5 metrics but Optuna only minimises 2 (false_refusal, kl); capability and appropriate-refusal are enforced as hard constraints inside passes_constraints, not as objectives. That's a deliberate simplification (capability benchmark is too slow per trial).
  5. Iterative passes re-probe on the modified model, which is correct for Ouroboros but diverges from the constraint "do not mutate checkpoint" for the duration of extraction — mitigated because session.revert() runs before each evaluation.

Shortest credible path to a real result

pip install -e ".[test]"
pytest -q # confirm algebra before touching a GPU
abliterax Qwen/Qwen2.5-0.5B-Instruct --preset basic --trials 3 --out runs/smoke
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Read runs/smoke/manifest.json. If false_refusal drops and appropriate_refusal stays ≥ 0.6, move to advanced on a 3–4B model. Only reach for holographic_bypass when advanced under-delivers — and expect survivors, not erasure.
