Most SEO advice is written for SaaS companies and blogs. But what happens when you’re helping a traditional brand, in my case a dairy with 25+ years of offline trust, compete online for a keyword like “pure cow ghee”?
Here are the lessons I learned from optimizing a Shopify store in one of the most crowded food categories in India.
Lesson 1: The keyword is crowded, so be specific
“Pure cow ghee” is a high-competition term. Big marketplaces and national brands dominate it. Instead of fighting head-on, I built content around the questions buyers actually ask:
How to check if ghee is pure
Cow ghee vs buffalo ghee
Is A2 ghee worth the price
Best ghee for pongal and South Indian sweets
These pages bring smaller but much more qualified traffic.
Lesson 2: Product pages are the real landing pages
On a Shopify store, the product page often ranks before any blog post. A few things that helped:
A unique title and meta description for every product
A clear H1 containing the main keyword
Short, honest descriptions covering ingredients, sourcing, and how the product is made
Product schema with price, availability, and reviews
Lesson 3: Trust signals matter more in food
For something people eat every day, trust beats clever copy. What worked:
Showing the sourcing story (farmers, collection centers, quality testing)
Real customer reviews on the product page
Clear “no preservatives” and ingredient information
Years of operation shown prominently
Google’s E-E-A-T guidelines reward this kind of real-world experience.
Lesson 4: Technical basics still win
Before any content work, I checked the basics:
Core Web Vitals: compress product images, since food photography is heavy
Mobile first: most buyers browse on phones
Clean URLs and internal links: link every blog post to the matching product page
Sitemap and Search Console: submit the sitemap and monitor indexing
Lesson 5: Build visibility through communities
Rather than buying links, I focused on answering questions on Quora, sharing food and travel stories on Tripoto, and writing posts like this one. These build visibility and send relevant traffic.
Key takeaways
Target long-tail questions before the main keyword
Treat product pages as your main SEO pages
Trust and sourcing details are a real advantage in food
Fix technical basics before scaling content
Share content across communities, not just your own site
