1440p or 4K monitor? 4K has sharper text but needs a powerful GPU. 1440p balances sharpness and performance.

I tested both to show you exactly when each makes sense.

Resolution Difference

1440p: 2560 x 1440 pixels (3.7 million)

4K: 3840 x 2160 pixels (8.3 million)

4K has 2.25x more pixels.

What that means in practice:

27" monitor at arm's length:

  • 1440p: Sharp, individual pixels barely visible
  • 4K: Razor sharp, completely smooth

Big difference at 32"+. Minimal difference at 24-27".

Gaming Performance (RTX 4070)

Cyberpunk 2077 (Ultra settings):

  • 1440p: 95 FPS
  • 4K: 42 FPS

Valorant (High settings):

  • 1440p: 340 FPS
  • 4K: 180 FPS

You'll need to lower graphics settings or upgrade GPU for smooth 4K gaming.

When to Get 1440p

✅ Gaming priority

  • High refresh rate (144Hz+)
  • AAA games at max settings
  • Budget GPU (RTX 4060/4070)
  • Competitive FPS gaming

Example: Dell S2721DGF 27" 165Hz ($280)

✅ Productivity / content creation

  • Photo/video editing
  • Text-heavy work
  • 32"+ screen size

  • Best = $280 ($10.37/inch)

4K 27":

  • Budget = $250 ($9.26/inch)
  • Best = $400 ($14.81/inch)

4K costs 25-40% more for same size.

Text Sharpness Test (Office Work)

Google Docs, 27" monitor:

  • 1440p: Sharp, comfortable for 8 hours
  • 4K: Noticeably crisper, easier on eyes

For coding/writing all day: 4K reduces eye strain.

GPU Requirements

For 1440p 144Hz gaming:

  • RTX 4060 Ti / RX 7700 XT (minimum)
  • RTX 4070 (ideal)

For 4K 60Hz gaming:

  • RTX 4070 Ti / RX 7800 XT (minimum)
  • RTX 4080 (ideal for max settings)

You'll spend $400-800 more on GPU for 4K.

The Real Decision

Get 1440p if:

  • Gaming is your priority
  • Want high refresh rate (144Hz+)
  • Have mid-range GPU
  • Budget is tight

Get 4K if:

  • Productivity/content creation
  • Have high-end GPU
  • Want sharpest text
  • Screen is 32"+

Sweet spot:

1440p 27" 144Hz for gaming. 4K 27"+ for productivity.

My Setup

Gaming PC: Dell S2721DGF (1440p 165Hz)

Work desk: LG 27UP850 (4K 60Hz)

This combo works perfectly.

Bottom Line

Best 1440p: Dell S2721DGF 27" 165Hz ($280)
