4K monitors used to cost $800+. Now they're $250. But are cheap 4K monitors actually good?
I tested 5 budget 4K monitors to see if they're worth it. Here's what you need to know.
The Problem with Cheap 4K
4K = 3840x2160 pixels (way sharper than 1080p or 1440p)
But cheap 4K monitors cut corners:
- Dim brightness
- Slow response time
- Bad color accuracy
- 60Hz only (no 120Hz+)
So is it worth it?
Best Budget 4K Monitors
Best Overall: LG 27UP550-W
Why it's good:
- 27" 4K IPS
- HDR10 support
- 99% sRGB color
- VESA mountable
- Usually $280-320
The catch: Only 60Hz (fine for work, not gaming)
Best Gaming 4K (budget): ASUS TUF VG289Q
Why gamers like it:
- 28" 4K IPS
- FreeSync support
- 5ms response time
- Usually $300
The catch: Big (28"), might be too large for some desks
4K vs 1440p: Which Should You Buy?
Get 4K if:
- You do photo/video editing (pixel density matters)
- You sit close to monitor (arm's length)
- Text sharpness is priority #1
- Budget allows $250-350
Get 1440p if:
- You game (easier to run, can get 144Hz+)
- You want bigger screen without scaling
- Budget is tight ($150-250)
- GPU isn't powerful enough for 4K gaming
Comparison at 27"
1440p (2560x1440):
- $180-250
- 110 PPI
- Easier to drive (gaming)
- 144Hz+ available
4K (3840x2160):
- $250-350
- 163 PPI (way sharper)
- Harder to drive (gaming)
- Mostly 60Hz at this price
Do You Need 4K for Work?
Short answer: No, but it's nice.
1440p is fine for:
- Coding
- Writing
- Spreadsheets
- Web browsing
4K is better for:
- Photo editing
- Video editing
- Design work
- Reading small text
Scaling Issues on Windows
Windows 4K scaling sucks. Some apps look blurry at 125-150% scaling.
macOS handles 4K better. Retina scaling works well.
If you use Windows: Test scaling before committing to 4K.
GPU Power Needed
For work (60Hz 4K):
- Any modern GPU works
- Even integrated graphics (Intel/AMD) can drive 4K for office work
For gaming (4K 60fps):
- RTX 3070+ or RX 6800+
- Otherwise stick to 1440p
The Real Decision
Get LG 27UP550 4K ($300) if:
- Photo/video editing
- You want sharpest text
- Work-focused (not gaming)
Get AOC Q27G2S 1440p ($200) if:
- Gaming matters
- You want 144Hz+
- Budget is tighter
Get ASUS TUF VG289Q 4K ($300) if:
- Light gaming + work
- You want both 4K and gaming features
What I Use
Main monitor: LG 27" 4K for work (coding, writing)
Secondary: 1440p 144Hz for gaming
4K is noticeably sharper. Worth it for my use case.
Bottom Line
Best 4K under $300: LG 27UP550 ($280-320)
Best 1440p alternative: AOC Q27G2S ($200)
If you can afford $300 and don't game much, get 4K. Otherwise, 1440p is the sweet spot.
