The Business app is where your customers and chat history already live. Adding automation used to mean moving the number to the API and leaving the app behind. Coexistence removes that choice, with rules on eligibility, cost and what the app gives up.
The short version
- Coexistence lets one WhatsApp Business app number also run on the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API) through an approved provider, a software vendor connected to Meta. One-to-one chats and contacts stay in sync.
- You can't switch it on inside the app. A provider starts Meta's sign-up: you enter the number, scan a QR code in the Business app, accept the terms and decide whether to share chat history.
- You keep the number, the chats and the app, and add what the app lacks: a shared inbox, automation and template campaigns. India is among the supported regions.
- Broadcast lists go read-only. Groups, calls and the official badge stay outside the API. API messages cost money: replies after the first 1,000 a month, and templates.
What coexistence is
Normally a number lives in one place, the Business app or the API, and moving to the API meant deleting the app account. With coexistence one number is in both. Customers see a single business, and one-to-one messages are mirrored: what you send from the app reaches the provider, which must show it in the thread. Meta's own name for it is "onboarding WhatsApp Business app users"; partners say "coexistence".

Does coexistence fit your number?
It depends on where your number lives today. Only the first starting point works with coexistence.
- The number is in the Business app: fits. This is the starting point Meta's sign-up expects. Keep the app and add the API on top.
- The number is on personal WhatsApp: doesn't fit. Meta's sign-up says the number isn't registered with WhatsApp Business. Move it to the Business app first, or use a new number.
- The number is on the API only: doesn't fit. There is no app account to keep, so the other route applies.
If you need more than 20 messages a second, or want groups, calls or the official badge on the API side, a full move to the API is the better route. Some providers offer both routes, so you choose between keeping the app and moving the number.
Is coexistence available in India?
Yes. Meta's changelog records the steps by which the feature reached India. Indian numbers were added three months after launch:
- Launch. Meta lets approved providers onboard Business app users through its partner sign-up.
- India is added. Business app numbers with an India country dialing code can be onboarded.
- More regions follow. Australia, Japan, the Philippines, Russia, South Korea, Turkey, the EEA, the EU and the UK.
We found no complete country list in Meta's documentation, only this record of additions. The sign-up is the final test: if it answers that the feature is unavailable for the region (error 3441042), that country is not supported yet.

Before you start
Three things have to be true. The last is easy to miss: a business doesn't press a button in the app, it goes through a provider that Meta has approved to run the sign-up.
- A Business app number. The number is registered in the WhatsApp Business app, and the app is up to date.
- App 2.24.17 or higher. Meta's minimum Business app version. An older app stops the sign-up.
- A provider that supports it. Only a Meta-approved Solution Partner or Tech Provider can run the sign-up. You can't do it from the app alone.
When the sign-up stops, Meta shows an error code. These are the ones that matter for the Business app route, and what Meta says to do:
| Code | What Meta says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 3441045 | The number isn't eligible to connect to the Platform. | Use the Business app more, then try again. Meta names no minimum. |
| 3441042 | The feature is unavailable for numbers from this region. | The country isn't supported. Try a number from a supported region. |
| 2655095 | The number isn't registered with WhatsApp Business. | Register it in the Business app, or enter a number that is. |
| 4563015 | The Business app is out of date. | Update the app to the latest version. |
| 3441049 | The number is already connected to a Platform account. | Disconnect in the app, wait 15 minutes, then retry. |
| 2655093 | The account is already shared with another partner. | Disconnect the current partner in the app, then connect the new one. |

How the connection works
The screens belong to Meta, so they look much the same whichever provider runs them. In Meta's newer sign-up, which asks for the phone number first, coexistence starts by itself when that number is already in the Business app:
- Enter the number in the provider's sign-up. Meta verifies the number at the start. A number already in the Business app sends the sign-up down the coexistence path with no extra choice.
- Check the account details. Meta shows the profile picture, name, number, category and website from your Business app. Confirm that it is the right account.
- Pick or create a Meta business portfolio. The connection is tied to a portfolio. Choose the one your company already uses if it has one.
- Scan the QR code in the Business app. Scan it from inside the Business app on your phone. Meta also sends a WhatsApp message to the same number with a link to the QR code.
- Accept the terms and decide on chat history. The app asks whether to share your chat history with the provider. This is the only moment to share it without repeating the sign-up.
- Click Finish. The Business app refreshes by itself and shows that the number is connected to the API. The provider then syncs your contacts and history.
Meta says the rollout of this order is in progress, so some businesses still see the older screens, where you pick an option to connect an existing Business app account. We did not complete a coexistence connection ourselves for this article, so the order above comes from Meta's documentation and the wording on your phone may differ.

What changes in the app
Nearly all of the app keeps working as it did. A handful of features are switched off because the API can't mirror them. Check this list before you connect, especially if you run broadcast lists.
Keeps working
- One-to-one chats, with message edit and revoke
- Contacts
- Group chats, in the app only
- Voice and video calls, in the app only
- Catalog, orders, status, profile, greeting, away, quick replies and labels, in the app only
- Channels
Switched off or changed
- Broadcast lists become read-only: you can't create new ones.
- Disappearing messages are turned off in one-to-one chats.
- View once messages are disabled in one-to-one chats.
- Live location messages are disabled in one-to-one chats.
- Every linked device is unlinked. You can link the supported ones again afterwards.
"In the app only" means the API side has no equivalent, so a provider's software won't show it. Greeting and away messages sit in that group. Meta says nothing about how they combine with a provider's automated replies, so run a test chat before you rely on both.
Three things you may want from the API side are simply not available to a number that is also in the Business app:
- Groups. Meta's Groups API is not available for Business app numbers, so groups stay in the app.
- Calls. Meta's Calling API needs a number used on the API only, not in the Business app.
- Official badge. Meta does not grant Official Business Account status to Business app numbers.
After the unlink, you can re-link every companion app except WhatsApp for Windows and WearOS, so those two can't be used again.

What syncs, and for how long
Every contact with a WhatsApp number can be synced, and you choose whether to share chat history. That choice decides whether the provider's inbox starts with past conversations or empty.
Figure 2. The three history limits Meta sets. Group chats are not included in the six months.
The sync takes several minutes, depending on how much history you have and how quickly the provider processes it. Keep the app open on the phone until it finishes. Meta lets a provider request the contact sync and the history sync only once each, so a second attempt means disconnecting and signing up again.

The 24-hour window, cost and speed
The API has a rule the app doesn't: free text is allowed only inside a 24-hour service window that opens when a customer writes to you. Coexistence keeps the rule for the API and leaves the app free of it. Who wrote, and when, decides what you can send:
Figure 3. What you can send through the API, depending on who wrote and when.
Meta describes no separate coexistence fee. What you pay depends on where a message is sent from. Meta now charges for service messages after the first 1,000 per number each month, and a number without a payment method can't send past that allowance.
- Sent from the Business app: free. Meta does not charge for messages you send from the app.
- Free-text replies through the API: 1,000 free a month per business phone number. From the 1,001st, Meta charges for each delivered service message.
- Template messages through the API: charged by category. Marketing, utility and authentication templates are charged at Meta's published rates.
- Inside a free entry point window: not charged. The window opens when a customer comes from a Click to WhatsApp ad.
Speed is the other trade-off. A number used only on the API sends up to 80 messages per second by default, while a number in both places is fixed at 20 a second. Messaging limits follow the business portfolio: a newly created one starts at 250 customers a day and can scale up.

Staying connected, disconnecting, switching provider
You can leave at any time, and only from the phone. In the Business app tap Settings > Account > Business Platform, select the connected platform and tap Disconnect. Meta says a provider can't disconnect the number for you while it is in both places. After a disconnect, wait 15 minutes before connecting again, and do the same before changing provider: the sign-up won't switch partners for you.
The connection can also end without you asking. These are the reasons Meta lists:
Figure 4. When the connection ends without you tapping Disconnect.
A new phone is the exception. When you reinstall the app or register on another device, the API connection is switched off for a moment, and on the new device you see a pre-checked option that restores it. If you leave it ticked, Meta reconnects the number in the background within a few minutes. Other linked devices aren't re-linked automatically, and the gap in chat history is minimal.

Questions people ask
Can I use the WhatsApp Business app and the API on the same number? Yes, through coexistence, started by a provider through Meta's sign-up.
Will I lose my chats if I connect? No. Chats stay in the app, and you choose whether to share up to six months of one-to-one history with the provider.
Does coexistence cost extra? Meta describes no separate fee. Messages from the app stay free; through the API, replies cost money after the first 1,000 a month, and templates are charged by category.
