Evaluating the Best Employee Monitoring Application Like a Code Review

Picking the best employee monitoring application is a lot like picking an observability stack. Everyone shows you the same pretty dashboards in the demo. The differences show up at 2 a.m., when something odd happens and you need to trust what you see. Here is a code-review-style checklist for evaluating one.

Review the diff: what changes when you turn it on?

Before installing, write down what you believe about your team today. Who is overloaded, where does time go, which projects run late. This is your baseline commit. After four weeks, diff the tool's output against it. The best application is the one that produces a useful diff: it confirms some beliefs and surprises you on others.

Lint rules every tool should pass

[ ] Employees can open their own dashboard
[ ] Idle thresholds configurable per role
[ ] App categories configurable per role
[ ] Tracking limited to working hours
[ ] Written list of data collected + retention period
[ ] Admin actions are logged (who viewed what)
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Six lines. If a vendor fails more than one, close the tab.

Check the blast radius

What is the worst thing that could happen if this data leaked or was misread? Screenshots and keystroke logging raise the blast radius sharply. Usage and active-time data raise it far less. Match the tool to the minimum data you need.

Test in staging

Run one team for four weeks. Hold a retro at the end with three questions:

  1. What did the data tell us that we did not know?
  2. What did it get wrong?
  3. Would the team be comfortable if the dashboard were public?

If the third answer is no, fix the policy before you scale.

Deployment notes

  • Announce first, install second.
  • Publish the data policy on one page.
  • Never use a single day of data in a conversation.
