Checking Stocks Without Leaving Your Browser Tab
Every time I wanted to check a stock price during work, I'd switch to a browser tab, load a finance site, wait for ads and popups, find the price, then return. Two minutes lost, every time.
There had to be a better way.
Stock Market Dashboard Extension
Stock Market Dashboard is a Firefox new tab extension that shows real-time stock prices, indices, and a market overview every time you open a tab.
What's included:
- Live prices for stocks you follow
- Major indices (S&P 500, NASDAQ, Dow Jones)
- Color-coded up/down indicators
- Clean layout that doesn't get in the way
AMO listing: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/stock-market-finance-dashboard/
Why a New Tab Extension?
The new tab page is real estate most browsers waste. You open dozens of tabs a day — that's dozens of opportunities to glance at prices without navigating anywhere.
The extension turns passive tab-opening into passive market monitoring.
Data Source
Uses a public financial data API with a small refresh interval. The goal is ambient awareness, not high-frequency trading. If you need tick-level data, this isn't it — but for "is the market up or down today?" it works well.
Use Case
Good for:
- Passive investors who check in once or twice a day
- Day traders who want a glanceable view between tabs
- Finance students tracking market behavior
- Anyone who googles "SPY price" daily and wants to stop
Setup
Install, click the extension icon, add your tickers, done. No account needed.
If you've been manually checking prices throughout the day, this is the zero-friction alternative. Free to install.
