Firefox acting up? Before reinstalling or switching browsers, try these steps. Most Firefox problems have a quick fix.
Start Here: Safe Mode
Safe mode disables all extensions and uses default settings temporarily.
How to enter: Hold Shift while starting Firefox, or: Help menu → Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If the problem disappears in safe mode: an extension is the cause. Re-enable extensions one at a time to find the culprit.
If the problem persists in safe mode: it's a settings or profile issue (not extensions).
Common Problems and Fixes
Firefox Is Slow
Try:
- Check active extensions — each extension adds overhead. Disable any you don't use.
- Check hardware acceleration: Settings → Performance → uncheck "Use recommended performance settings" → check "Use hardware acceleration when available."
- Check your GPU:
about:support→ Graphics → look for "WebRender" status. If it shows "software" or is disabled, GPU rendering is off. - Reduce tab count — 50+ tabs with preloading enabled consumes a lot of RAM.
about:config tweaks for performance:
-
browser.tabs.unloadOnLowMemory= true (unloads inactive tabs when RAM is low) -
gfx.webrender.all= true (force GPU rendering — verify your GPU supports it first)
Videos Don't Play
- Check if the issue is site-specific or universal.
- If site-specific: check if an extension (especially uBlock Origin) is blocking media. Open the uBlock dashboard and check if the site has any blocked items.
- Try enabling hardware video decode:
about:config→media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabled= true (Linux), then restart. - Check Firefox's codec support:
about:support→ Media section.
Pages Load Slowly or Don't Load
- Try another network — if it's a Wi-Fi issue, not Firefox.
- Check DNS: try changing to DoH in Settings → Privacy & Security → DNS over HTTPS.
- Disable DNS prefetch temporarily:
about:config→network.dns.disablePrefetch= true. - Clear cache: Settings → Privacy & Security → Clear Data → check Cached Web Content → Clear.
Firefox Crashes
- Check recent crash reports:
about:crashes - Look for a pattern — specific site? After installing an extension? After a Firefox update?
- Try disabling extensions in safe mode.
- Check for conflicting software (antivirus, security tools that inject into browser processes).
On Linux: check dmesg or syslog for OOM (out of memory) kills if Firefox is being killed by the kernel.
Extensions Not Working
- Make sure the extension is enabled:
about:addons→ Extensions. - Check if the extension has permission to run on the current site — some extensions are restricted.
- Disable other extensions — sometimes extensions conflict.
- Check the extension's permissions in
about:addons→ click extension → Permissions.
Sync Not Working
- Check your Firefox account status at
accounts.firefox.com. - Sign out and back in: Settings → Sync → Sign Out → Sign In again.
- Check what's synced: Settings → Sync → what checkboxes are enabled.
- Sync conflicts: the most recently-modified item wins. Don't expect perfect merge for bookmarks.
Profile Issues
If you've tried everything and Firefox is still broken, the issue may be your profile.
Refresh Firefox
Help → More Troubleshooting Information → Refresh Firefox.
This resets Firefox settings and disables extensions, but keeps bookmarks, passwords, and cookies. It creates a backup of your old profile in a folder called "Old Firefox Data" on your desktop.
Good for: persistent crashes, settings corruption, extensions that can't be removed normally.
Create a New Profile
For a completely clean slate: about:profiles → Create a New Profile.
You can run multiple profiles and compare behavior. If the new profile works but your old one doesn't, use the profile manager to selectively migrate your old data.
When to Check the Logs
For technical users:
Browser console: Ctrl+Shift+J — shows JavaScript errors, extension errors, network failures.
Network monitor: DevTools → Network tab — see what requests are failing, redirecting, or slow.
about:logging — Enable verbose logging for specific Firefox components. Advanced use only.
Keeping Firefox Healthy
- Update regularly: Firefox releases every 4 weeks. Updates fix both security issues and bugs.
- Limit extensions: Every extension you install adds code that runs on every page. Audit and remove unused ones.
- Clear data periodically: Cookies, cache, and site data accumulate. Clear them every few months.
- Restart occasionally: Long-running Firefox sessions (days/weeks) can accumulate memory leaks. A restart every few days helps.
For sessions: if you keep Firefox running for weeks because you're afraid of losing tabs, Tab Manager & Session Saver lets you save and name your tab sessions before restarting — so you can confidently restart without losing your tabs.
Most Firefox problems come down to extensions or profile corruption. Safe mode is your first diagnostic tool; profile refresh is your last resort before reinstalling.
