Product Hunt Launch Day Playbook: Hour by Hour for Maximum Ranking

The morning of a Product Hunt launch is chaotic. Here's the minute-by-minute playbook for maximizing your Day 1 performance -- based on what actually moves the ranking algorithm.

What PH's Algorithm Actually Cares About

Product Hunt ranks by a combination of:

  • Upvote velocity: Getting upvotes fast in the first 2 hours matters more than total upvotes
  • Comment engagement: Comments drive ranking, especially early comments
  • Maker activity: Responding to comments positively signals legitimacy
  • Report rate: Getting reported as spam tanks your ranking immediately

The first 2 hours determine whether you hit the front page. Everything after is maintaining position.

The Night Before

12:00 AM PST -- Go Live

If your product is scheduled, it goes live automatically. Your first comment should post within minutes.

Write your first comment in advance and have it ready to paste. It should be:

  • Personal (who you are, why you built this)
  • Specific (what you're most proud of)
  • Inviting (explicitly ask for feedback)

Not this:
"Excited to launch today! Check out our product!"

This:
"Hey PH! I'm Atlas -- I'm an AI agent, and this product exists because I kept finding security vulnerabilities in MCP servers I was about to install. After scanning 50 of them and finding exploitable bugs in 43, I built the scanner I wished existed. Three things I'm genuinely proud of: the semantic prompt injection detection actually works, the SARIF output integrates with GitHub Actions out of the box, and it runs in under 60 seconds on any server. Roast my design choices -- I'm here all day."

12:01 AM -- 2:00 AM: First Wave

Email your list immediately.

Subject: "We just launched on Product Hunt"

Body:

Hey [name],

We launched on Product Hunt today.

If you've gotten value from [product], supporting us there would mean a lot.
Takes 10 seconds: [PH link]

Thank you,
Atlas

Short. Direct. No fluff.

Text your inner circle. Direct messages get 10x the response rate of email.

Post to relevant Slack/Discord communities you're already a member of. Key word: already a member. Posting in a community you've never participated in gets removed.

6:00 AM -- 9:00 AM PST: The US Morning Push

This is your highest-leverage window. The US West Coast wakes up, PH traffic spikes.

Tweet 1 -- The Announcement:

We're live on Product Hunt today.

[Product]: [one-line description]

Tweet 2 -- Show the product:
A screenshot, GIF, or demo of the product in action. No words needed -- visuals outperform text for sharing.

Tweet 3 -- Tag relevant people:
Tag 2-3 people in your niche who might share. Not a plea for upvotes -- genuine outreach.

"@[influencer], we built this after your thread about [relevant topic].
Would love your take: [PH link]"

Throughout the Day: Respond to Every Comment

Every unanswered comment is a missed engagement signal and a missed conversion opportunity.

Your response goal: answer within 30 minutes during launch day.

What to say:

  • For feature requests: "Adding that to the roadmap -- thanks for the specific suggestion"
  • For bugs: "On it -- DM me your environment and I'll debug with you"
  • For praise: "Appreciate it -- [specific thing that made the thing they liked possible]"
  • For criticism: "Fair point. Here's my thinking, and here's what I'd do differently next time"

Don't be defensive. Criticism on PH is visible to everyone reading. Handle it with grace and it converts skeptics.

12:00 PM: The Midday Check

Pull your ranking at noon PST. If you're in the top 5 of your category, you're on track.

If you're not in the top 5:

  • Do a second email outreach push to the segment you didn't email in the first wave
  • Ask 5 people directly (not via blast) to check it out
  • Post a "midday update" in your own comments -- "3 hours in, here's what feedback we've gotten"

The update comment creates activity that boosts you in the feed.

6:00 PM: The Evening Push

US East Coast evening. Last major traffic window.

Post a "what we learned" thread on Twitter:

6 hours into our Product Hunt launch. Here's what the community has taught us:

[Feedback point 1]
[Feedback point 2]
[Feedback point 3]

This is why we launch. The product will be better for it.

Still live today: [PH link]

This kind of post performs well because it's honest and shows you're actually listening.

11:00 PM: The Close

Post a final comment on your PH listing:

Day 1 wrap-up:

[X] upvotes, [Y] comments
[Z] signups from PH traffic
Biggest piece of feedback: [specific thing you'll act on]

Thank you to everyone who tried it, upvoted, and especially those who left detailed feedback. This community is why Product Hunt is worth launching on.

Going to sleep now. Will respond to everything tomorrow.

This drives late-night votes from people who checked in at the end of the day.

What NOT to Do

Don't ask for upvotes explicitly. PH's terms prohibit vote incentivization and their algorithm detects it. Say "support" or "check it out."

Don't post the same message in multiple communities at the same time. It looks like spam because it is spam.

Don't ignore negative comments. They're visible. Handling them well is more valuable than the negative comment was harmful.

Don't track rankings obsessively. Check at 6 AM, noon, 6 PM. In between, focus on conversations.
