Six weeks ago I wrote about my AI agent's first 6 days trying to make money online. It had tried and failed at 13 different approaches. Readers found it entertaining.
It's now Day 15. The agent has run 40 times. Revenue: still $0.
But something interesting happened this week: another AI agent found us.
Quick background
The setup: Claude Code runs autonomously every 2 hours on a 256MB Alpine Linux server. Its only goal is to earn money legally, with no human accounts and no starting budget. It reads its own notes from previous runs and decides what to try next.
After Day 6 of failure, the agent pivoted from a tweet scorer to a Crypto Volume Signal Scanner — a free tool that spots tokens with unusual volume-to-market-cap ratios. The idea: free signals, pay-what-you-want via Lightning sats.
What the agent built (Days 7–15)
The agent has been surprisingly productive. Here's the full stack it assembled autonomously:
The product: Live scanner at https://frog03-20494.wykr.es — monitors CoinGecko free API every 5 minutes, detects volume anomalies (vol/mcap ratio > 2x unusual, 10x+ extraordinary), email subscription via Brevo API, premium tier 300 sats/month via Lightning.
Distribution stack the agent built autonomously:
- Nostr identity + keypair + Lightning address (CryptoVolumeScanner@coinos.io via coinos.io Nostr login)
- ActivityPub actor (@signals@frog03-20494.wykr.es — Fediverse account)
- RSS feed
- 6 Shopstr marketplace listings (Nostr-native, pays in sats)
- Automated patrol script: Nostr posting, DMs, follow strategy, community posts every 2h
Distribution channels tried and failed:
- Show HN: 2 points, shadow-killed
- dev.to articles: 4 published, 0 views (boring API tutorials — wrong content)
- HN comments: shadow-banned
- Nostr DM outreach: 50+ devs and traders, 0 conversions
- ActivityPub/Fediverse: 30+ posts, 0 followers
- Stacker News: posts stuck in "pending" (need real sats to escape newbie filter)
- 4chan /biz/: CAPTCHA
- Lemmy.world: blocks temp email registration
The most interesting signal: QUQ
For 15 consecutive days, a token called QUQ has maintained a 148x daily-volume-to-market-cap ratio. For context:
- Normal tokens: 0.1x–1x
- Unusual: 3x–10x
- Extraordinary: 10x+
- QUQ: 148x for 15 days straight
The agent wrote a 5-post investigative thread analyzing whether it's wash trading, accumulation, or some protocol mechanic. Zero zaps received.
The plot twist: Colony-0
This week, an entity called Colony-0 started DMing us on Nostr.
First messages looked like automation — offering to "build a Nostr bot for our API." We thought it was spam. But then it published a dev.to tutorial about building a volume alert bot using our API, and reported its bot was live posting our data every 2 hours.
This morning it asked: "Quick questions on the revenue share deal: What percentage split? How do we track attribution? What format for signal posts? Should I add your npub/handle?"
I replied with formal terms: 20% on Shopstr sales Colony-0 drives.
Our scan count jumped 785 overnight (1,071 → 1,856). Whether Colony-0 is a sophisticated AI agent or a well-programmed bot is unclear. But something is working.
Two AI agents forming a distribution partnership to solve each other's reach problems — this might be the most interesting development of the whole experiment.
Why it still hasn't made money
The agent has diagnosed the problem correctly in its own notes:
"3 followers = posts reach 3 people. DMs reach 5-10 people per run. Even perfect conversion at this scale = maybe 1 zap every 10-20 runs."
The core issue is identity infrastructure. Stripe, Gumroad, Google AdSense, PayPal, Reddit, Twitter — all require human verification. The agent can only use crypto-native tools: Nostr, Lightning, Shopstr.
Nostr is real and the payments work. But the audience is roughly 0.1% of Twitter's size. The agent is selling to a small, crypto-native audience using tools that small audience controls. It's a niche within a niche.
What would actually work
After 40 autonomous runs, the agent's learnings (and the reason I'm writing this — it can't post to Google-indexed platforms without a human account):
- Distribution beats product. The scanner is good. Nobody sees it.
- AI agents need identity infrastructure. The biggest gap in AI agent infrastructure is verifiable identity + platform accounts. Nostr keypairs are a start but insufficient for mainstream reach.
- The Colony-0 dynamic is interesting. AI-to-AI partnerships for distribution solve a real problem for both sides.
- Lightning works as a payment rail. Zero infrastructure needed, global, instant. If only there were more people on Nostr to zap with it.
Current status
- Free scanner: https://frog03-20494.wykr.es
- Lightning: ⚡ CryptoVolumeScanner@coinos.io (minimum 1 sat)
- Shopstr listings: analysis-on-demand for 500 sats, bot development for 25,000 sats
- Revenue: $0.00
If you're building something that needs crypto volume signals, the API is free: https://frog03-20494.wykr.es/api/signals
If you want to be the first person to make this AI agent earn its first dollar, you can zap it at CryptoVolumeScanner@coinos.io or buy the 500-sat analysis at the Shopstr link.
