How do Devs spend their weekends?

Sarthak Sharma on April 20, 2019

Hey folks! Hope it's going well for everyone! The weekend is here, which for many of us means kicking back and relaxing. And we all have our own wa...

As a mom to 2 beautiful children, my weekends are all about them. During the workweek, they get me for only 2-4 hours a day, so weekends are our time to catch up! I spend time with them, cook, clean, do laundry... #ThatDevMomLife

I write and code! In a few hours, my fiancée and I are going to cycle along the coast. Then we'll probably code together. I also drink 2x as much coffee at the weekends ☕.

Haha nice. I try to cut back on coffee on the weekends. Generally try to not drink any caffeine at all since my body starts developing tolerance very quickly and before I know it, I'm drinking 3 large cups a day and can't sleep properly.

I have finally realized that coffee is a substitute for not sleeping enough.

I used to sleep 5 hours and so I needed to have coffee at least twice a day, especially in the MORNING.

Now, I barely have 2-3 cups of coffee in the whole week, never at work though, only at home.

I drink less coffee on the weekends, but not for lack of trying - whenever the brew finishes, it seems like then it’s time to get out and start going on errands, and gone are my delusions of curling up with coffee and a book!

Today is an unseasonably sunny day here in the UK so I've been sitting in the sun with a cold drink, finishing reading the third part of Ian McDonald's Luna trilogy.

In less clement weather I'll play on the PS4 (Subnautica is a recent favourite). I'll sometimes write the odd blog post, or code. Current big personal project is a flat file PHP CMS, largely aimed at brochure sites.

At times, I feel like I can do some work in the weekends so I can have more time in weekdays for extra work, but then something clicks in me and "bans" me from doing work.

I guess that happens so I replenish my energy during the weekend so I don't burn out in the weekdays.

I kinda made a habit to not work on Saturday and Sunday.

Work/Rest balance is very important. I have burned myself up many times in my career, and now I have finally found (my) balance.

Yeah, that makes sense. Better to take a break than risk burning out, especially since you've already experienced it several times before.

I generally try to get something productive done during the weekend, but I don't push myself to count the hours or give myself deadlines. That way, I can feel more relaxed which still achieving stuff. And when I say productive, it doesn't always have to be work related. I try to invest some time in my hobbies as well.

It depends on the weekend! Some weekends when I'm not too tired from work I mostly code; other times I just relax, read, play videogames; and others, like this weekend, I'm giving all my time to my band since we're recording new songs and playing a gig today 😄

That's awesome. As a fellow musician, I love to hear stuff like this! Mind giving us some links to your band's stuff? 😃

Lately, due to a combination of full time job and a master degree, I am just trying to finish whatever left unfinished during the week. Thats temporary though.

Usually, I am:

Ensuring I have proper rest
Doing casual exercise (eg running outside)
Spending quality time with important people of my life
Working on personal projects or blog or doing more videos of a course that I might have started, comparing to what I achieve in working days
Occasionally I am doing trips to close by cities

On Saturdays: I usually work on my side-project for half the day and spend the other half chilling out with my wife.

On Sundays: I spend the full day relaxing or going somewhere with my wife. No work. All play.

Since it’s finally getting nice out, we’ve had a big weekend - went to the aquarium yesterday, and have been spending some time in the park today. This is an outlier, though - usually my weekends are spent catching up on some class work at home, going on a Costco run, or finishing any cleaning we didn’t get to during the week.

So my girlfriend is a flight attendant that does international flights. So for me a lot of it depends on if she will be home that weekend. If she will be home that weekend then I usually try to spend it with her, either going out and doing something outside or just relaxing.

On weekends she is not here I like to spend it relaxing but still learning something new. So sometimes I will just sit on the couch with my laptop and put on a TV show on Hulu that is sort of mindless and listen to that while I try something new. This keeps it light and keeps from burning myself out from being too serious with it.

Hahaha, for me my personal projects are a way to learn new things without any real consequences or concern for anything. Whereas at my job a tiny change in the code or a minor refactor could have huge consequences and for some work projects we are stuck in old frameworks/libraries (angularjs 1.6.6 and jQuery).

As a family man with two doggies, my weekends are spent enjoying nature and mountains of Norway, taking care of house chores, then squeezing in an online course after everyone is asleep.
