Google has introduced Selfie Video, a new biometric account recovery feature that allows users to regain access to locked accounts using a short selfie video instead of relying solely on passwords, SMS verification, or authenticator apps.
The feature leverages AI-powered liveness detection to verify that a real person—not a static image or replayed video—is requesting account recovery. Google also states that biometric data is encrypted, stored securely, and can be deleted by the user, making privacy a core part of the design.
From a cybersecurity standpoint, this is an important evolution in identity verification. While biometric recovery improves usability and helps reduce common account takeover techniques, it does not eliminate risk. Security teams should continue modeling threats such as deepfake-assisted identity fraud, compromised endpoints, malware, and social engineering attacks that target the recovery process.
As organizations move toward passwordless authentication and stronger identity verification, understanding the strengths and limitations of biometric technologies is becoming increasingly important.
