How to Anonymize Customer PII in PostgreSQL pg_dump SQL COPY & INSERT Files in Local Browser RAM

Seeding a local staging environment or reproducing a production query bug almost always starts with pg_dump -Fp dbname > dump.sql. Yet raw PostgreSQL SQL dumps contain tab-delimited COPY ... FROM stdin blocks and INSERT statements packed with plaintext customer emails, SSNs, E.164 phone numbers, bcrypt hashes, and JSONB session tokens.

Why Naive Regex Scripts Break psql Restore

  1. Corrupted Tab Delimiters & \N Nulls: Standard text replacements accidentally strip \t separators or convert PostgreSQL \N null markers into literal strings.
  2. Broken UNIQUE & Foreign-Key Constraints: Replacing every email with redacted@example.com immediately fails on CREATE UNIQUE INDEX users_email_idx during psql -f dump.sql.
  3. Cloud Upload Compliance Risk: Uploading production .sql dumps to external SaaS masking platforms violates GDPR and SOC2 data residency policies.

Deterministic Client-Side pg_dump Anonymization in Local RAM

We engineered PgDumpShield Studio to sanitize PostgreSQL COPY ... FROM stdin streams, multi-row INSERT statements, and JSONB columns 100% locally inside browser memory:

  • 35% Partial Domain Mask: Retains email domains and phone area codes for regional debugging.
  • 70% Standard Synthetic PII: Generates collision-free, UNIQUE-safe staging emails and identifiers.
  • 95% Strict Safe Harbor HMAC: Deterministically hashes PII across tables so foreign-key joins remain intact.
