🌐 VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network): The Software-Defined Network Splitter
How can an organization take a single physical network switch and carve it up into completely isolated, secure virtual networks without buying extra hardware? Through a VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network).
Here are the key points:
🔹 1. What is a VLAN?
Virtual Local Area Network: A technique that divides a single physical switch into multiple logical, independent networks using software configuration.
Even if computers from the HR department and the Accounts department are plugged into the exact same physical switch, they remain completely isolated from each other.
🔹 2. How It Works & Trunking
Port-Based VLAN: Network admins assign specific switch ports to specific VLAN IDs (e.g., Ports 1–5 for VLAN 10, Ports 6–10 for VLAN 20).
Trunking & Tagging: When traffic needs to travel between multiple switches while preserving VLAN boundaries, a special Trunk Port adds an IEEE 802.1Q "tag" to data packets so receiving switches know which VLAN they belong to.
🔹 3. Key Benefits
Enhanced Security: Keeps sensitive departmental traffic isolated from the rest of the local network.
Broadcast Control: Reduces unnecessary network congestion by shrinking broadcast domains.
Cost Efficiency: Achieves logical network separation without purchasing separate physical hardware for every group.
🚀 Think of a VLAN like a massive apartment building where every floor has locked doors and independent walls, sharing the same physical foundation while keeping each household completely private!
👇 Have you ever configured VLANs on a managed network switch or in a virtual lab environment? Let me know!
