Moadra on Protea VI: getting started without outdated demo healing advice

Disclosure: I built and run Moadra Field Guide, an independent English reference for Gloomsoft’s Moadra. It isn't affiliated with Gloomsoft. Game images on the site belong to their owners.

Moadra released on October 22, 2026 for Windows (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. It is a single-player action-adventure on the sand-swept planet Protea VI: movement-heavy traversal, combat, puzzles, a scanner bot, and evolution through Protoplasm in organic chambers. I built moadraguide.com as source-linked field notes — not as a finished 100% playthrough with invented maps.

This post is the getting-started angle: controls, the first exploration loop, healing version traps, and what is still unverified. Site pages used here were checked October 23, 2026 (UTC+8). Steam app ID 1713730 matches the live store page.

Before you land

Open control settings before committing to a route. Gloomsoft’s October 21 demo update confirms rebinding, so an old keyboard diagram or controller video may not match your layout. Find movement, jump, dodge, fire, free aim, target lock, scanner, and map in your bindings. The guide uses action names on purpose.

If you played the updated Steam demo, the developer confirms that save progress carries into the full game, and that demo achievements stored locally unlock on Steam after you buy and launch the full game. That statement applies to the updated demo; it does not promise that every historical demo save works.

Steam Deck support is officially Verified. Verified is a compatibility label, not a battery-life or locked-frame-rate promise. Console control and save behavior should be checked on that platform.

Published PC requirements (Steam), also mirrored on the FAQ:

Minimum Recommended
OS Windows 10/11 64-bit Windows 10/11 64-bit
CPU Quad-core Intel Core i3-8100 or similar
RAM 4 GB 8 GB
GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX 900 series or similar GTX 970 4 GB or similar
DirectX 12 12
Storage 9 GB 9 GB

These are published specs, not measured benchmarks. The minimum GPU wording is broad — do not treat it as a promise for every GTX 900-series card.

Learn movement in a quiet room

Moadra’s toolkit, per the official description, includes rolling, dodging, leaping, wall jumping, and sprinting. That is a description of the game’s movement set, not a claim that every action is available the moment you start. Read the on-screen unlock prompt when something new appears.

Practice in a safe stretch of ground:

  • Separate short taps from longer jump holds.
  • Practice stopping near an edge before you combine movement with aiming.
  • Check landing spots before committing to a jump.
  • If a ledge seems impossible, record it and look for another route before repeating the same failed attempt.

Late corrections can be more dangerous than a missed shot. Speed is part of the fantasy; control is what keeps a session useful.

Aim first, then commit

A reliable combat habit: find stable footing, line up the target, fire, then reposition. Free aim and target lock solve different problems. If the wrong enemy is selected, adjust aim before trying again.

In the 1.1.0 demo, Gloomsoft added stationary free aim on the gamepad’s left trigger, a crosshair, and lock selection toward the eligible target closest to that crosshair. Treat that as the explanation for why older videos look different, then confirm the current binding in settings. Demo notes are labeled by version on the site; they are not silently presented as launch patch notes.

Do not follow outdated healing advice

This is the sharpest trap for anyone who watched early demo footage.

  • 1.1.0 demo notes: healing skill renamed to Heal Lifeblood, Bioplasm cost removed, recharges in Evolve Chambers.
  • Earlier 1.0.1 notes: discuss a Bioplasm cost for Purify Lifeblood.

Those statements describe different versions. They are not interchangeable instructions. Before a hard encounter, read the current healing description, your available uses, and the route back to the last chamber. When an attempt fails, separate “ran out of healing” from “took repeated avoidable damage” — those need different changes.

A first exploration loop (editorial, not a spoiler route)

From the getting started guide:

  1. Read the current objective; identify the next unexplored connection.
  2. Clear immediate threats before stopping to inspect the room.
  3. Scan unusual surfaces and organisms; check the logbook for a new entry.
  4. Record blocked routes by the obstacle you can actually see.
  5. At the next chamber, read available improvements before spending resources.
  6. After a new tool, revisit one nearby blocked route to learn what changed.

This is a routine for learning systems. It is not a verified room-by-room unlock order.

Protoplasm vs Bioplasm vs “I will respec later”

The upgrades page keeps the vocabulary separate:

  • Protoplasm — biomass from defeated organisms, used in organic chambers for metamorphosis / improvements.
  • Bioplasm — a resource referenced in official demo notes for skill costs (including Protopulse). Check the live tooltip; do not apply an old healing cost.
  • Heal Lifeblood — see the version note above.
  • Protoplasm Gists — a named collection category in the published trophy list; no full location list is verified on the site.

Choose upgrades for the bottleneck that ended your last attempt. More damage does not fix missed shots. A purchase does not automatically open every door you have marked.

Respec has not been verified in the official material checked for the guide. Unconfirmed is not “proven impossible,” but until you see an explicit refund option in your current game, spend as though the choice may persist.

Scanner: revealed is not the same as open

The official description confirms X-ray inspection, hidden paths and secret areas, and mapping explored places. The October 21 update also confirms a scan logbook. Entering a room does not automatically complete every scan inside it.

The scanner guide suggests a repeatable sweep: clear danger, start from the entrance edge, pause on unusual organisms and dead ends, watch the current completion indicators, then read the logbook. Gloomsoft’s 1.1.0 notes say scanning got faster, highlight colors clearer, and some low-lore objects stopped being scannable — another reason old color charts mislead.

A hidden route answers where. It may leave how for a later ability. Note the physical obstacle; do not invent a required upgrade name in your notes. Published trophies separate Servo Bot Ace (100% Scan Progress) from full inventory under Perfected — keep those counters separate. The site has not verified a complete scan target list or missability rules.

What the guide will not invent

  • A complete collectible map or full campaign route (not available yet; the world page uses an official map screenshot plus a local notebook).
  • Co-op or multiplayer (Steam listing is single-player).
  • Easy no-death workarounds or unverified respec routes.
  • Achievement unlock steps that are not in the published lists (the achievements page compares 21 Steam achievements and 22 PS5 trophies with spoiler controls).

Mature content note from the store: frequent violence and gore. Accessibility features listed on Steam include adjustable text size, subtitles, camera comfort, custom volume, and play without quick-time events — check the current settings yourself.

Where to go on the site

If you want a community guide on Steam as well, that is a separate draft for posting from a personal Steam account — this Dev.to piece stays on the open web and links the field guide directly.
