How I finally stopped fighting file converters (PDF, Word, images, Excel)

A few months ago I needed to turn a PDF into a Word document. Ten-second job, right?

Here's how it actually went:

  • Site 1: "Your file is being processed…" with a 30-second countdown next to three ads.
  • Site 2: Converted fine. The download had a big watermark across the first page.
  • Site 3: "You've used your 2 free conversions today. Upgrade to Pro."
  • Site 4: Wanted me to create an account before the download button showed up.

And every one of them had the same quiet problem: I had no idea what happened to my file afterwards. It was a contract. Was a copy still sitting on some server?

After that I started paying attention to what a good converter should look like. My checklist ended up being short:

  1. No sign-up
  2. No watermark
  3. No countdown or daily cap
  4. A clear answer to "is my file stored?"
  5. Honest about what it can't convert well

The one I use now: Filembly

πŸ‘‰ filembly.com meets all five.

What it converts

Documents

Images

  • JPG, PNG and WEBP in every direction, e.g. PNG β†’ WEBP for faster websites

Spreadsheets

Plus the everyday PDF and image stuff

It also works in English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian.

What "private" means here

  • Files are converted in memory and sent straight back. Nothing is written to disk, and nothing is kept after download.
  • File contents aren't logged.
  • Uploads are checked by extension, MIME type and the file's actual byte signature, so a renamed file gets rejected.
  • EXIF data is stripped from images, so your phone's GPS location doesn't travel with the output.

The file does go to a server to be converted. It just doesn't stay there.

What I like most: it tells you the truth

  • PDF β†’ Word extracts text, not exact layout. It says so before you convert.
  • Scanned PDFs get a clear error instead of an empty document.
  • Password-protected files are rejected with an explanation.
  • Excel β†’ CSV exports the first sheet with formulas as values, and it tells you.

Quick tips whatever tool you use

  • Use WEBP for website images. It's usually much smaller than JPG/PNG at the same quality (PNG vs WEBP).
  • Use PNG for screenshots and logos, JPG for photos (JPG vs PNG).
  • If PDF β†’ Word gives you nothing, the PDF is probably a scan (why that happens).

What's the worst file-converter experience you've had? πŸ‘‡

Disclosure: I'm part of the team behind Filembly. Feedback on files that convert badly is very welcome.
