I've tried something similar to what you describe. I did, however, reference a YouTube video. It increased the cover section, but it was still blank. If I understand correctly, you can only reference videos that are uploaded to Dev.to, is that it ?
Unfortunately this didn't work. I'm hoping for @ben to shed some light on it. ;)
