AI search is quietly changing link building.
Not with an algorithm update. With a paragraph.
The data point that changed my mind
Ahrefs recently analyzed 232.8 million US desktop searches. The finding: AI Overviews now appear on 82.91% of branded searches (Sept 29) — up from 61.3% in July.
Read that again. When someone searches for your brand name, Google answers before they click.
And here's the part nobody talks about: those answers cite third-party pages more than your own site. Wikipedia alone shows up in 72% of branded AI Overviews.
So the first thing people read about your brand is a paragraph you didn't write, built from pages you don't own.
What this means for link building
Old game: buy 100 links, rank higher, get the click.
New game: earn placements on sites Google actually cites — and your brand shows up inside the answer itself.
One guest post on a real, trusted publication can now put you inside thousands of AI-generated answers.
A hundred directory links? Invisible.
Link building didn't die. It got a promotion — from traffic driver to reputation builder.
The practical takeaway
Before your next link-building campaign, ask one question of every placement: would an AI answer trust this site enough to cite it?
If yes, that's where your budget goes. If no, it's just a number on a report.
