File Transfers Slowing You Down? Try rsync now!

🚀 Tired of slow, unreliable file transfers?

Let ⚡rsync do the job for you

I just published a deep dive on how rsync can seriously speed up and simplify file syncs across Linux 🐧, macOS 🍎, and even Windows (via WSL 💻).

📌 Here’s what you’ll get:
• 🔍 Real-world benchmarks with cross-OS comparisons
• 🛠️ Installation steps (via apt and brew)
• 💡 A practical use case with tuning tips
• 📊 Graphs + visuals to keep it hands-on and clear

Whether you're a dev, sysadmin, or just someone tired of sluggish backups — this one’s for you.

💬 I'd love to hear how you use rsync or other sync tools!

rsync is great when you control both ends and run it on a schedule. The article's pitch is right — delta transfer + ssh is a big speedup over scp for repeated transfers.
The piece it doesn't cover: what to do when you don't run the loop yourself. In a small team, someone has to keep that rsync cron alive, and the moment the laptop leaves Wi-Fi it breaks. The two patterns that close that gap:

  • Replace the rsync loop with a drive-letter mount: SMB / S3 / SFTP / WebDAV backend, the user gets a normal folder on their Windows desktop, no sync client to babysit. ScsDriver is one option (mount table + cache layer + handles offline state), there are others in the same space.
  • Or keep rsync but build a tiny health monitor around it (last-run timestamp, exit code, free disk on the target). If you only have one or two destinations, the monitor is more important than the rsync tuning itself. Operational note: rsync on Windows via cwRsync / WSL works but introduces a second auth surface (the Windows user vs the ssh key). If your team is non-engineering, the mount pattern usually wins because there's no ssh key for the user to lose.
